LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 19 October 1887

LOCAL AND DISTRICT N'WS. ---4---. Fao Dr. Terrey's corrected advertisement see page 3. We lare' informed that on Sunday, the 9th instant, the foundation stone of a new Roman Catholic Chapel in the Kangaroo Valley was laid by Dr, Carroll in the absence of Cardinal Moran, who had been expected. The:tempo. rary chapel was beautifully decorated for the occasion, and the sum of £130 was collected at the ceremony. Tua child, Elsie Prior by name, who is men tionod in our Jamboroe correspondence as hay ing been sadly burnt onil Saturday evening, died from, the effects of tihe burning on. Monday morning. An i nquest was held yesterday; and we understand that the evidence did not ex actly confirm the representation givel in the correspondence mentioned. The verdict was to the effect that the child came to her death by burning, but that there was no evidence to show.how the fire originated. CORRESPONDENCE. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 19 October 1887

TO TIIM EDITOR. Sin,--laving been informed on good authority that it is being freely ciculated, for reasons which are unmistakable, that my residence in Kiama is of a 'temporary nature, 1 shall feel obliged if you will allow mo to contradict such an unwarrantable and detrimental rumour, and to state that I have leased " Elsie Bouse," the properly of T. J. Fuller, Esq., where I intend to reside and practice my profesebio:. I hope to settle permanently in Kiama, trusting to the good sense of the people of this large district to be sufficiently alive to their own interoete to seo the neceisity of retaining the services of at least two legally qualified medical men of good repute. For the information of thoes who have been led to believo otherwise, I have been a legally qualified medical practitioner sinco 1879, and it is contrary to the re cognised professional etiquette of medical man to advertise their qualifications or sound their own trumpet. JAMBEROO. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 19 October 1887

STAMI3ERO. Tium incidents I have tomention on this oc casion, ly way of local news, are not' of the most cheerful character. On Saturday even. ing a very serious mishap occurred at Mr, James Prior's, adjoining the village. Mr. 'and Mrs. P. had been from home during the day, and did not return till towards seven o'clock, The usual evening's work had to be done, and the youngest member of the family, an infant girl about three months old, was laid to sleep in the children's bed.roao,n iwith a candle burning on the table. As ?fif e'oning was wiarm, and there was a lively hbreL6e, it would appear that the latter nmust haveo brought the bed.ourtain into con. ,tact. with the flame of the ocandle, and 'tha6 the burning material fell upon the olhild's face. The house is little .hore thaita'shell of slab. and weathler-loard, and the whole must have been speedily des. troyed if Mr. Prior had not himself been 'still on"the spot. By dint of the almost supernatural exertions to which people are ...

ALL ABOUT LONDON CABMEN. No. II. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 22 October 1887

ALL ABOUT' LONDON CTABME,. No. II. Ov the 14,252 hlackney carriage licenses is .sued not more than 12,000 are in use. But this is a large numnber,, Allowing 20f' for' eacclr horse and cabl,, it would make a cal stand rmaching nearly .16 niluis. The cab drivers of London, with tlheir families and those delpendtent upon tloelm, alone comrprise a town of 50,000 inhalbitants ; while if we add tile oelllibus drivers alnd conductltors and their fuamilies, we should have a city of 100,000 persons. This gives some ildea of the importance of the cab and omnius to London, and of theilt numlber of persons on gaged ill the occupation as drivers and con duclors, to say nothing of the thousands or. ployed in the stables and indirectly. While tihe practical London catlman laments over the inilux of outsiders into his ranks, the snmanll cab proprietor is gieatly exercised over thle advent of several nIoblle lords into the business as proprietors of cals. 'Ibis icl.nrac of tile aristocracy may be ex...
