Commissioners of Crown Lands under the Gold Regulations have been necessa rily clothed with a very considerable degree of discretionary power, and, exce t in rare instances, that power has been used with as much moderation as could have been expected. So sadden was our transition from a mere wool and tallow producing dis trict, and so electric, spontaneous and over whelming were the moral and social effects ot its change to a district yieldiag in unex ampled abundance, the most precious of earth's ? treasures, that our government see oied paralyzed, and almost incapable of realizing their position, or determining upon- the course necessary to be. .pursued under, such new and extraordinary circum stances. GOLD ODDS ANTD ENDS. [Newspaper Article] — Bathurst Free Press and Mining Journal — 17 September 1851

GOLD ODDS ANTD ENDS* A gentleman, just returned from the Mountain Run, informs us that he has spent several days prospecting about its creeks and gullies, and found gold where ver he tried; but, generally speaking, in small quantities. He found it roost abun dant at Brown's Creek, where he thinks steady labourers would earn 10s. a day with ease. Several parties had been at work, but were compelled to leave off in consequence of the saturated condition of the ground, every hole quickly becoming a well after the earth had been displaced, A report is current that a Sydney party who were at work on Oakey Creek, found a dia mond a few days ago, when so elated, were they with their prize that they decamped in the night-time. Another party immedi ately (took possession of the claim, arid have been doing a very respectable business in gold,*'- Mr Dunsford purchased an- excellent specimen of goH entirely free from quartz, weighing upwards of 23 oz*., from a person named Green, who found it n...
