In "Tlie Modern Play masc," , a favourite book oí games, etc, with schoolboys in the 'sixties and 'seventies, the game and Hs im- plements are fairly fully described under thc name of "boiulilorc," and whether it originally came (as some say) from China or not, it was un- doubtedly played in England up to a lit.tlc later than the middle of thc last century-of course, only by chil- dren. The extraordinary thine; about Diabolo is the way in which it has "caught on" with adults as well as children, and it is quite comic to see a: man, who would probably feel in- sulted if you invited him to trund'e a hoop or spin , . a peg-top, working diligently at Diabolo. As for the game itself; it is one which calls fer the exercise of a good deal of skill. Thc knack of spinning the reel or top is not easily acquired, and when you havo learnt that, the throwing up of the top and catching it ...

THE "POST." FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1907. Backing and Filling. [Newspaper Article] — Cairns Morning Post — 6 December 1907

THE "POST" FRIDAY, DÉCEMBER 6, 1907. Backing and Filling. To clush or not tu dusk, to run together or to go alone, are tho diffi- culties with which the Kidstonilc and Socialist sections of the Opposi- tion are confronted in connection with thu approaching general elec- tions. Both sections arc asking themselves whether it is better to stick to their guns or droP them, whether they should adhere to their respective programmes and principles or, for the sake of. expediency, to throw them overboard tempiJ'.irily. With a loud vocee, accompanied by much high falutin', the Central Poli- tical Executive professed te adopt the Irish party's "Sinn Fein" policy of "ourselves for ourselves," declar- ing that the Socialist section would go to the country absolutely unfet- ter...
