LUCERNE. Lucerne, or Alfalfa, as it is called in America, is the- principal fodder plant in Mildura. Very few holdings are without a plot of it, and the confession must in justice be made that no fodder plant surpasses it for hardiness and adaptability to various soils, prolific growth and feeding propeities. If Messrs. Ohrffey Brosn did nothing else for Mildura, the excellent example tlj'r set in putting down` lucerne plots 'on the holdings that they planlted in the early days should make their name a household word in this settlement. Lucerne was known to the Greeks and Romans 1300 years ago, and was used as a forage plant long before the Christian era. Although.it grows well in a variety of soils, land underlaid With shade, hardpan, impervious clay, is not suited to its successful growth, inasmuch as the roots must prenetrate the subsoil to moisture.
