TO THE EDITOR OF THE NORTH-EASTERN ENSIGN. [Newspaper Article] — The North Eastern Ensign — 23 July 1872

TO THE EDITOR OF TIE NOR?lH. EASTEIRN ENSIGN." Sir,-Somu people soy that "charity covers a multitude of sins." Now, if this "be true, I think it would not Le a bad plan for our Government to extend its charity and so hide a number of its sins. It is a well known fact that, certain localities are periodically almost overrun with tramps, and theoe, of course, aro all deserving men though unfor. tunate. Some of their, no doubt, well de. satve to be provided for by HTer Majesty in the Coburg (Pentridge) mansion. Now, I would surgest that a cer'ain amount of cash bh annually deposit d by the Governmental every police station, in order thpt these needy worthies may be relieved iritlinut going'from house to house begging. By this means, Mr Editor, the police would obtain a more exten. sire, and at the same time, minute knowledge of these men, and perhaps might, without the trouble of a painful search, occasionally drop on one advertised 'as "-wanted." And if the.Government subsidy should b...

TO THE EDITOR OF IRE NORTH EASTERN ENSIGl. Sir,-At Waogarat last week Mr Parftt men. tioned to me in.the course of a convoroation we were having that he seriously thought of initia. ting a movement for the purpose of perpetuating. the memory of the late M3r Michael Cusack, of Wangaratta. I asenre you, Sir, at the very men. tlon of the name I felt an irresistible thrill, such ao cannot be experienced by ineincere individuals, Such an one that I will not only use every effort that in me Ihea hut will induce.others towards the same object. TH Publsted on 7ucado?s ? FridayF.ys. TUESDA.Y,,:I;ULY 23, 1: 872. WmaVrTEz. Mr. L. L. Ssrrt's faults may be there is one thing certain that with regard to the question of postage reform he has ren dered the country some. seovice, It was through his instrumentality that the heavy charge of 4d. upon a colonial letter was roe duced to 2d, " At the time it was alleged that the reoduction would seriouely intorfere with the revenue derived by the department. .This, oweer, woeas proved not to be the case, and it is not therefore too much to predicate that if a Id. rate were introduced into the colony it wvould be a step in the right directioa. We firmly believe that the correspondence of. the colony would he doubled., Many persons thought the revenue would be affected when telegrams of 10 words wore seduccd to Is,, ,ut the result has proved just the opposite. Many poor peopl hivbo now on account of the postage being 2d. do not so frequently write to their relations and friends would, if i...
