PRISON PANTOMIME Strolling across the yard at Ctaotm-i fortl Gaol (says the London "Evening Xcivs") a man decently dressed in an overcoat and bowler Hat requested the warder to open thu sates for him, "as he had finished repairing the "organ." The warder remarked carefully, "What'ti your name?" turning to tho visitors' book. "Gritlin." said the man who had finished repairing the organ. But •'Grif fin" was a name which did not 6eem to have been entered, and the warder thought lie would keep the gates closed tor the moment. In the meantime to telephoned to the otlice, and the quick arrival of officials •showed that his caution was justified. "Griflin" was at once recognised as ono •>!' tlio prisoners. It was found that he had shipped away unobserved during exercise, and passing through tho kitchen garden, entered the probation warders' quar ters. LAURENCE STERNE ' I "A1YAS! POOR YORICK!" I Two hundred years ago to-day. Lau rence Sterne, the immortal author of "The Sentimental Journey" and "Tris tram Shandy," was born at Clonmol. and the event is to be commemorated this evening by a dlnnor at the Authors' .Club. Mr Andrew Hope Haw kins will - preside, and Mr Edmund Gosse is to be the principal guest (says the "Westminster Gazette" of November 24). Although Sterne was born in lie land, there was nothing Irish in his connections or descent; and it was solely owing: to the fact that his lather, who was an army officer, hap pened to be stationed there with his regiment in 1713 that Ills'" distinguished son first saw the light of day in tho Emerald Isle. On the other hand, tho family was essentially English, and for genera tions had dwelt in Yorkshire. Sterne's great-grandfathor was in his day an eminent divine, and rose to the posi tion of Archbishop of York. In 171s tho family returned to their native county, and with the except...
