Local and General News. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 4 September 1908

Local and General News. The municipal elections in the Shire of Healesville were of a very quiet nature. There were five candidates for the three seats, viz., Messrs Sloss, W. Nichol, Keppel (retiring), and Stephens and Jefferson. Mr btephens (a Melbourne gentleman) had formerly been a coun cillor, but Mr Jefferson was a new aspirant. It was felt by the ratopayers of the Anglesey portion of the shire that their: candidate, Mr Ke pel, who had hold his seat since the shire's inception. twenty years ago, was weak in the Healeavillo end, owing to the manner in which he presi'ded over the council during the Crowley disturbances, and it was feared that he might lose his seat. The fear was well founded, for Mr Stephens defeated him by 18 votes with out any assistance from the Anglesey portion of the shire. The following are the results :--Sloss, 242 votes ; Nichols, 204; Stephens, 172 ; Keppel, 154; Jef ferson, 69. Would you know a reliable cure For all kinds of ills you endure, Luxo.Tonic...

At 11 a,m. the big event commenced before one of the largest gatherings yet assembled in Melbourne. Nathan, the well-known exponent of the noble art, acted as referee and acquitted himself in great style. "Bill" Lang, who was in the pink of condition, fought splendid the first two rounds, bringing "Tommy " Burns to the floor for six seconds with a straight left on the chin, amid intense excitement. Alexandra & Yea Standard NEC TEMERE NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1908. Municipal Election. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 4 September 1908

qIigandra & qa ,htandatd NEC TEYMEILI NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1908. Municipal Election. The municipal elections hoeld last week did not result as expected, the surprise being the narrow majority gained by Councillor Leckie. The polling at Alexandra was heavy, the votes recorded by Councillor Murray being a decided increase in the numbers gained by this gentlemen when before the electors three years ago. Coun cillor Scale also received very liberal suppo.t at the centre booth, while Councillor Leckie,, who came next, appears to have lost many votes, pro bably owing to the..fact that a :town resident in the person of: Mr. J. A. Baker was in the field and who, be it said, polled remarkably well: for..the first time of asking. With regardl to the votes recorded Mr. Baker it might be mentioned that between 30 and 40 votes were lost to him owing to .the absence of ratepayers in Melbourne and others who could not find time to record their votes. It is hard to arrive at the...

New Justice. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 11 September 1908

New Justice. --- - It is, indeed, gratifying to learn that the powers that be have at last appointed a second magisetrate to this partioealr portion of the Central Bailiwick. The Shire of Alexandra fairly bristles with J's.I'., all good and tried emen, he it said. Still the appointment of Mr F. Wheeler has not been brought about onelay too soon, as dlring the past eight or nine years the public have been seriously lnconvenienced. M[r Wheeler, It will be remembered, ably tilled a similar position some years ago. andc during his occupaucy of tihe Benrc dischargedl the duties imposed upon him in u fearless and even-handed manner. He was, in snort, one of the Iei,t juticers appointed in this part of the country. We feel sure the reappoiotmcent of Mr Wheeler will be received with the utnmost ntsisfarlion. This gentleman?ii to be complimented upon his return to the Bench, and, no doubt, he will find plenty of business awaiting him. Persons can now depend upon being able to transact busine...
