AUSTRALIAN WINES IN BRITAIN According to a correspondent in the "Times Trade Supplement" of June 12th. latest official returns show that the turnover in all classes of wines has been well maintained, but there has been a significant decline in the withdrawals of Portuguese wines. The qilantity removed front bond a decrease of some 16 per cent, com pared with last year. The increase in the popularity of the other kinds, notably French, Spanish' and Austra lian more than counterbalance this slump. The present falling off In clearances of Portuguese types may be only temporary, but according to the correspondent it is certain that the public will not lack encourage ment to desert the cheapest ports and the dubious ports for reliable wines from Australia. The belief is now gaining ground that 1927 will see, the revision of the whole scale of English wine^ duties to the deiriment -if Porta-* gal ajtid the the corresponding advan tage of Australia.
