FRIDAY JULY 21. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 27 July 1865

FnRDAT JULY 21. In the Legislative Assembly, NMr. Jones asked whether coroners ha& power to compel the attendance on juries of members of the House ? The Speaker observed that the rule was, that all civil duties appertaining to a member of the house must give way before his high est civil duty-that of attendance on his du ties in Parl'iament. A member ot' Parlia ment was exempt fromserving on juries dar- i ing session, and for forty days before and forty days afterwards. On the consideration of the report on the Appropriation-cum-Tariff Bill, The Speaker called attention to the fact, that it was contrary to the practice and usage of Parliament, and also opposed to the standing orders of the House, to tack reve nue clauses to appropriation clauses. He did not deny the right of the House to combine the two subjects in one bill, but he submitted that the right could not be exer cisedwithout first suspendingthestanding or ders. He regretted that in the infraction of the usage an...

LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY. THURSDAY, JULY 20. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 27 July 1865

LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY. - 40 TuruSDar, JrLY 20. In the Legislative Assembly, The Speaker announced the receipt of a Governor's message, recommending certain amendments in the Electoral Law Cnnsolida tion and Amendment Bill. - Mr. ;Higinbotham explained that one of the amendments was an important one. The original bill contemplated a change in the constitution of the Legislative Council, but when that proposition was rejected by the Upper House, the measure was altered ac cordingly. However, by an inadvertence, the qualification of occupiers entitled to vote at the election of members- of the Legislative Council was left at £50, instead of £100 The message proposed that the proper amount should be substituted; and he begged to move that the amendments be agreed to. Mr. M'Cann urged that the instalment of Legislative Council reform. which had been secured by the Attorney-General's efforts at consolidation should not be relin quished. Mr. Higinbotham contendedthat whatever reform might b...

LANCEFIELD. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 27 July 1865

LANCEFIELD. (FROM A CORRESPONDENT.) A ball in aid of the funds of the Lancefield Common School, has been fixed to come off on Friday the 4th prox., when it is hoped sufficient surplus will be realized to clear off the balance of debt incurred in its erection. The ball is to take place in the new school room, and a first-class band has been engaged from Melbourne. The committee have con- stituted themselves caterers, and several of their number have volunteered to test the generosity of the inhabitants by levying contributions of good things for the supper- room. Tickets to admit a lady and gentle- man are 15s. and single tickets 10s. and are to be had from the members of committee. The object is most praiseworthy, and the committee has wisely adopted a most agree- able method of securing success. POLICE COURT, JULY 14, 1865. In consequence of their being no magis- trates on the bench, the cases were adjourned till next court day.
