VOXOAR PEOPLE. I " ? "(Worn Oie 'Kecrpool Leader.) Bx the1 above, we allude to a certain class of wen who are constantly, monkey-like, assuming a degree of gentility to which they have DO earthly cl lim ; but to convinco them of this failitür would be something like, to use an old aphorism, " trying to atop the tide with a pitchfork." It is of no avail to bring forward tho most convincing proofs that, notwithstanding all their vaunting aud pretensions, vulgarity still stamps indelibly their most trivial as well as J their most important actions, and you are still in the same position as when you essayed to bring them round to your own sentiments ; they either can't, or, much nearer truth, won't confess that you have read their real character. 1 Conspicuous among euch Are retired ?tra<ftsmën-men who started life with the tide at; tho very lowest ebb, but by industry, close application to business, «nd unswerving determination to watch for and ' seise' every opportunity tha...

AND CENTRAL QUEENSLAND ADVERTISEE. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1872. THE lato visit of II.M.S. " Rosario " must have created a sensation among thc Polynesians. The object of the cruise presumably was to apprehend, if possible, the murderers of the late Bishop PATTESOIS- and others. Captain MARKHAM, however, if we moy judge by his log, has little faith in the machinery of courts in such cases. Ile is an advo- cate of retributive justice, or, as it may perhaps be moro correctly termed, summary ¡md indiscriminate vengeance. Ho lands first at Nuna and Montague Island, and demands the murderers of tho crew of tho cutler " Fanny." The natives "refuso" to give up the mur- derer?, and consequently the war vessel opens fire upon them. Assuming that before " opening fire," Captain MAMCHA» had made himself acquainted with the facts of the murder, and had satisfied himself that the tribe of natives he attacked wcro privy to it, his action in this maller must bo exonerated from censure. Uut it is qui...
