ADELONG. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 25 April 1868

ADELONa. (from our correspondent.) April 23rd. — The weather still continues dry, and, if anything, wanner than last week, but there are heavy clouds hovering about, and I trust we may shortly have a fall of rain. Our little town has been rather livelier than usual this week, owing to the numbei of teams Dasaine through with produce for the various neighbouring towns, or arriving from Sydney with goods for Mr. Turnbull's - new store &c. All this tends to create a degree- of animation which is refreshing, and leads us to imagine that Adelong is yet but in its infancy and that we may look forward to the time when our thoroughfares will be always thronged with loaded teams. This will, I believe, come to pass when our farmers' get better paid for their produce, and when our mines are worked on a large scale. Our mining news this week is good, and it promises to be better shortly. ' At present the Gibraltar Reef iB looking better than ever, the reef in Mr. Perkins' ^ claim being ...

TUStUT. (fsom oub correspondent) April 22kd.— The new Pound yard*, erected in Mr. Dean's paddock, on the Gilmore road, are now completed and ready for the reception of impounded stock. It Is therefore to be hoped the reprehensible practice of galloping wild horses through the streets of tie town, will now be discontinued. On the 17th instant Mr. M. Tuohy held his first auction at the Union Bazaar, when some very good furniture was disposed of at high prices. Mr. McDonald, of ttrungie, started wun a large mob of horaea en route for the Melbourne market on the 18th instant. On Tuesday last the Tumut Bench of Magistrates met for the revision of the electoral lists for the present year ; greater facilities have 'been afforded to the collectors by the issue of printed lists, and they appear to have performed their work with an extra ;degree of care. Last year a vast number of electors 'were virtually disfranchised by the omission of their names from the roll. Mr. and Mrs. Myers gave two ...

The Chair was occupied by- the Colonial Secretary, and about 30 members of both Hours* and of all shades of opinion were present. Mr. Palmer, the Colonial Secretary of Queensland, and Mr. Thompson, Clork of the Legislative Assembly, were also present. The only toast proposed was ' the Queen,' to which full justice was done. His Excellency the Governor has received an anonymous letter from Beechworth, Victoria, written in a good flowing hand, censuring him for not acceeding to the Prince's desire that O'Farrell's case should bo referred to the Imperial Government, and stating that all the police of the colony would not prevent, his life and that of Mr. Parkes being takon as atonement for O'Farrell's.
