By a " Government Gazette Extraordinary,"; published on Saturday, May 2, the; public were informed, that the time for completing the electoral list in the Alberton district was extended to the 7th instant. It was impossible that the Gazette contain\x=req-\ tlie notice could arrive before the afternoon of the very day on which the extended time terminated; it is evident, therefore that we have not been much benefitted by the prudent foresight of the government. Had timely notice been given of. the extension, a whole week would have made a mtaerial difference, but owing to the blundering of the executive, we gain nothing. Whether the period , for ; receiving the claims of those whose names have been omitted will be extended remains to be seen; in the mean: while it is limited to the 24tli -inst., and we would once more impress upon every qualified person in the district to take the ...

GENERAL SESSIONS, MAY 12. ALBERTON. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Guardian — 16 May 1856

y GENERAL SESSIONS, May IP ALBEllTON. . .There were only two cases for hearing\x=req-\ at General Sessions, both of which his honor Judge Forbes thought too trivial to engage their attention,- and therefore po- I litely gave-his private-opinion and declined; to open court, wliich is; we confess, rather an unusual course." Generally the gratification of receiving the " white kids," the1 usual emblem of a maiden-court, is a siiffi-; 'cient inducement to open court, congratu-' late the jury, condole "the barristers,-and adjourn to'next sitting; • But the mind of Judge Forbes is not to- be affected with such common-place formalities. / 5 ^- The two cases lor.hearing were Pearson y: Abson • (the particulars of which, are 'given above), ana Scott v. MELBOURNE. ELECTIONEERING. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Guardian — 16 May 1856

MELBOURNE;' ELECTIONEERING. In electioneering matters there have been a few. movements lately in various parts of the colony, which we shall proceed to chronicle. It is refreshing' to notice even' two or- three new men appearing- in the field; but so far as they have yet afforded us an opportunity of judging', they do not seem to have brought forward any new ideas; ' We still want men with sufficient I'expansion of mind to take in the colony, r present1 and prospective, who could legis i late for it on the broad principles of exten ded nationality, and overleap those narrow, . selfish, and contracted limits, on which our i legislation has hitherto been based. • We i may. hope that such men may yet come forward, but we greatly fear there are few in the colony. A requisition, signed by moro than 150 electors of Sandridge and Emerald Hill, or as it is called, South Melbourne, lias been j presented to Robert S.
