THACKERAY'S DEKKAT. Playing at elections has now become the favorite pastime of all Impoverished debauchees, faded fops, discarded flunkeys, and used up, dandy litterateurs, who have influence enough to procure a brace of fools—tlje one to propose, and tho other to second them, on the day of nomination. There was a time when it was a just reproach against the English aristocracy, that if there happened to be in the Cuiiily a thorough bred fool, an arrant sneak, or a perfect imbecile, he was safe to be devoted to the Church. The same principle wouldnow seem to bo acted upon in regard to the House of Commons. And no doubt it is the knowledge of this that has encouraged all the varieties of the "incompetent and improper" to aspire to the dignity of a British representative. A more signal instance of the prevalence of this pernicious notion in regard to the duties and qualifications of a member of Par¬ liament, than the candidature of Mr. Thackeray for the city of Oxford, it would b...
