THE I L L INOIS i Ffi EE TRADER 1 From the Chtcsgo Democrat The BMte HeglalwrCaaal 91 arris -" An article in (he last State Register in eulogy of tho course of this gentleman and in denunciation of his opponents as professed democrats" and "the trained bands of federalism", has created much surprise in this section because it was understood that he was not to be a candidate for re-election and because some, if not all, of the northern delegation to tho next legislature are committed against him. And we can assure the editor that the north has never sent a more honest and capable delegation to the councils of our state, anil one never more devoted to the cause of democracy, and at the same time more independant of all dictation. If the delegation along the canal is not thoroughly democratic, then we are not democrats. But the Register has more than once denounced us, though we sincerely hope that our recent labors for the whole democratic ticket will convince Mr. Walter and his co-ed...

( ... ; ' From the People' Advocate. Th IUgUwr Cns.nl Cunllor JTIarrU. The State Register, of the 29th ult. contains an article lauding one Mr. I. N. &orns, who, by some means unknown ami . .1.aiirnriairxr tn those who Have in" cas, knowledge of his utter want of honesty or rectitude of purpose, was elected by tho last Legislature to the responsible office of President of the Canal Board, steps out of the way and makes a false, base, and uncalled for attack upon the Acting Canal Commissioner, Gen. It is entirely uncalled for, inasmuch as the Register, if it was so disposed, might have continued to laud Morris until doomsday with the same effect, as it has in its puerile attack upon Gen. Fry, and the world would have been none the wiser. The assertion of the Register, that Gen. Fry was opposed to the introduction of reform upon the canal, is totally lalse, On the contrary, ho has labored with un remitting zeal, to accomplish that purpose, whereever and whenever...

THE ILLINOIS FltE E T It AD E it. EXECDTtTK Ds'ARTMEST, I LI., September l-'tb, 1842. In 1830 a law was passed by our legislature, making the notes of the State Hank of Illinois receivable in payment of revenue and of debts due the school fund, with a proviso that in case of danger of loss to the state, the governor, auditor and treasurer should prohibit their reception for such purposes. This provision originated in the well grounded fears of the legislature in relation to that institution ; and made it obligatory upon those officers to interfere and prohibit the reception of its paper whenever its depreciation should be likely to occasion a loss to the state. The legislature of 1839 reconstructed the revenue system of the state, and made notes of the Bank of Illinois at Sliawneetown also re ceivable for revenue, leaving the power of excluding State Bank paper untouched and nnimnmrpil. YVIifin the ilcnreciatiou of the paper ot the State Bank took place last spring, about half the r...
