Ihe liwifa [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 11 April 1868

Ihe liwifa Boys and Girls Before their Teem ., We noticed an article in THE WESTERN ; TJBAL of March 14 th , on Boys and Girls i their Teens , and the question Is asked y a mother how they are to be treated In lelr early teens . It is a pity that any moiier having had the training of her . chllren up to such age , is then obliged to ask ow to treat them . At twelve or fourteen ; is much more difficult to find a remedy > r some existing evil—though all might ot call them evils , but natural occurences though we do not hesitate to protounce them evils—than It is to trace it to ts true cause . What child , who had been woperly trained , would at twelve instruct _ a in-anything , or at thirteen begin to lave beans ? On the mother devolves by far the greater tmount of responsibility in the moulding of the minds and the shaping of the characters ) f her offspring ; and , alas 1 too often are they left , like neglected vines , to attach themselves to anything that may chance to ...

(ffMltofo totm [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 11 April 1868

(ffMltofo totm Buthar s Boat—Making Friends . There are two thlngs , that you can do , saidRuthars father , In talking with his son about the boat one day , very soon after the purchase of it , — or , rather , two means that you can employ , to secure the good will of the boys towards your boat ; and Ill tell you what they are . I should like to know very much , said Ruthar . I mean to try them both . Perhaps you wont like them , said his father . I shall try them , replied Ruthar , whether I like them or not . Tou wont succeed with them very well , said his father . unless you like them . People very seldom succeed well in carrying into effect plans of which they do not approve . • Ill try , at any rate , said Ruthar ; and besides , I think I shall like them . The first thing , said his father , is so to manage , in regard to the boat , that the boys about here shall derive as much benefit from it as possible , for themselves . What do you mean , father , by deriving benefit from i...

THE APIARY [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 11 April 1868

THE APIARY Form and Size of Bee Hives , Has sufficient importance been given to the form and size of the bee hive ? It is realized by few bee-keepers how much of success in the business is depending upon these two considerations . A colony will do little but swarm If placed in small hivessay a cubic foot—such hives giving only room for storing and brood . Give 6 , 000 cubic inches room , and the probability is that they will not swarm but store a large amount of honey . In either c ase If you have only a single box , with larger or less amount of honey , you must drive out or destroy your bees to secure the honey , and when secured it is in bad shape to preserve for use , or to carry to market . This has led to the construction of boxes of convenient size for the reception of surplus honey . The old-fashioned box hives , with boxes placed upon the top , with 2 , 000 cubic Inches in the hive , will give 10 lbs ., 20 lbs ., 80 lbs ., and sometimes 40 lbs . surplus . Mr . Qulnby , in h...

THE POULTRY YARD . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 11 April 1868

THE POULTRY YARD . Poultry on the Farm . There is an evident desire on the part of many interested persons to inaugurate another period of wild speculation in and extravagant prices for poultry . We have little sympathy with this desire , and certainly- have no intention of counseling any of our readers ito pay great prices for fancy fowls—unless they choose to do so . Extraordinary stories told of the value of any breed of fowls should generally be taken with some allowance for possible interested motives , and lt will often be found that the great profits sometimes reported from poultry keeping are largely due to particularly favorable clrcumsiauces . But while all this is true , we would be very glad to see a much greater degree of interest taken in poultry throughout the West , and more care taken to improve our present stock . There can be no doubt that a small stock of fowls can be kept with actual mouey profit , beside the advantages of having fresh eggs and spring chickens a...
