A Typical Poland-China Boar , Owned by Walter Garvey , Thayer , III . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910
A Typical Poland-China Boar , Owned by Walter Garvey , Thayer , III . A Talk on Farm Power . Every hour counts big with the modern farmer . He could not possibly get along with old-fashioned methods . For there are so very many more things to be done each day than formerly—and certainly the days have not lengthened . So farmers are crowding the hours . They are buying time-saving machinery of every kind . And thousands of farmers have solved many of their problems with a gasoline engine . The practical timesaving , work-saving , and money-sav-ing advantages of a good gasoline engine has been proved to them and by them . It seems strange that every farm is not equipped with such power , and the main reason for this condition seems to be that many farmers are not fully convinced or do not fully realize the real value of a good gasoline engine . No matter how small or how large your farm may be—a months use of the right kind of a gasoline engine will make you wonder how you ever got al...

Hog Notes—By a Practical Hog Man . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910
Hog Notes—By a Practical Hog Man . A . J . Lovejoy , Roscoe , 111 . It is very noticable at our Fairs , not only County Fairs but State Fairs , that the exhibit of Berkshires is much below that of any of the other breeds , particularly -what is known as the pork breeds , and this is not as it should be . If the breeders o £ Berkshires wish to make their breed more popular they certainly must place them before the public at the Fairs , for say what you will there is no way of bringing a breed to the front that will compare with showing it at the Fairs , both County and State . The average farmers who are the masses that visit our fairs , naturally would think that the breeds that are shown in large numbers must be more popular than those that only come out in very limited numbers , and if intending to buy and have no established preference they would naturally purchase of the breeds that are most in evidence , consequently they would purchase from other breeds than the Berkshires . T...

Boar Pigs That Will Make Herd Headers . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910
Boar Pigs That Will Make Herd Headers . Wellington , Ohio . To The Berkshire World . Gentlemen : —We have a fine lot of Spring pigs . I think they are as good if not the best lot of Berkshires that we ever had farrowed at the Walnut Grove Stock Farm . There are a lot of outstanding pigs among them , boar pigs that would make herd headers for any first class herd , and sow pigs that will make good enough dams to hold a place in some good herd . These pigs are sired by the representative boars , Premier Masterpiece 3 d 87943 , and King Edward 3 d 127398 . These boars get will show up favorably with the best of the breed , although we dont claim them to be the best boars of the breed or the best sons of any great sire . Very truly yours , Everson Bros .
What Constitutes a Breeding Animal . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910
What Constitutes a Breeding Animal . A Subscriber Writes : — Some time ago , we sold a sow bred , to one of our customers . She farrowed a litter , raised it and this litter was sold . The sow however , never bred afterwards and the buyer now claims that the sow was guranteed a breeder and that this guarantee was not made good . Of course , all breeders know that the fact that she farowed a litter and raised it would make our guarantee good . The future usefulness of animals is altogether another matter which no breeder could possibly guarantee . Similar instances are often brought to our attention and we are glad -o have the opportunity to present our views on this much misunderstood question . There is an implied guarantee that any breeding animal sold as a breeder , no matter at what price or whether at private or public sale , must prove a breeder . Just what constitutes a breeder is the only point in question . We take this position , and rightly we think , that if the sow ment...

HISTORY OF FAMOUS BOARS OF THE BREED [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910
HISTORY OF FAMOUS BOARS OF THE BREED The Opinion of the Former Own ers of Rival s Champion . Rival s Champion 112500 . Farrowed September 2 , 1907 . Sire , Lord Premiers Rival 92805 . Dam , Longfellow Duchess 3 d 100873 . Bred by Kinloch Farm , Kirksville , Mo . Owned by S . C . McCoun , Danville , Ind . The reputation of breeders and the excellence of breeds of domestic animals is to a remarkable degree influenced by the outstanding sires . There are comparatively few animais of really outstanding individual merit that reproduce their type . The Berkshire breed has been fortunate in possessing relatively a large number of great sires . One of the greatest in this list , judged from show yard excellence and uniform excellence of his getis , Rival s Chamion . Few boars of any breed have measured up to so high a standard in all that goes to make a great hog . In the show ring , when at his best , he was invincible . In breeding condition he was still a champion , and as a sire he not ...
