While traveling in the pursuit of his busi ness for the house of Friedlander, Koch & Co., of San Francisco, he ffa3 taken ill in Portland with what proved to be typhoid fever. He greatly desired to be with his rela tives, and on reaching his sister's home in Salem, thanked God that he was under her roof and loving tare. Their brother, Mr. Theo. Mansfield, hastened to his bedside ind has showed all a brother's care ami attention to the last. Drs. J. Smith and J. N. Reynolds, too, have done everything in their pow .rtn alleviate suffering and restore heilth. But watchful care and ten der nursing of friends and the skill of physicians were powerless to avert death which took place last night.
