Had a Pleasant Visit. A. H. Kuhlman and wife returned from their trip to Napa and Sacramento, where they have been visiting friends and relatives. He wad holding one of the pig's legs when it began kicking and threw Mr. Kuhlman's hand against a knife held by one of the helpers. The cord of the third finger was nearly sev- • crod and at the time it was thought the finger would become stiff, but it ia nearly well now. ■■■ ■■■■. ' v. ■;

WORK OF CENSUS OFFICE [Newspaper Article] — Amador Ledger — 2 February 1900

WORK OF CENSUS OFFICE Reservoirs Built. — Floodwaters Impounded LAND RECLAMATION AND WATER UTILIZATION Thousands of Acres of Land $re How Cultivated That Were Once Barren. Washington, (D. C.), - January 19. — The preliminary work of the Census Office in collecting the data relative to tho arid and *sub-humid regions shows that during the past ten years vast areas have been- reclaimed by irrigation, both by ditching from running streams and drillinar for subterranean waters. Where only a few years ago the sage-brush struggled for existance in the midst of a waste of alkali and sand, today are fields of waving grain and blossoming orange groves. * Hundreds of miles of canals and ditches have been sunk, and thousands of acres of land havo been " cultivated in zones where once tho desolation of Sahara reigned. ?;' Moistened by fresh watei-s and ferttilized by the rich silt of the swift mountain streams, once trackless wastes and desolate valleys in the arid Southwest, have become as fer...

War Preparations of the Boers. The Kansas City Journal says: "Paul Benninghovcn of St. Louis, who enjoys the double distinction of being the tallest man in Missouri and a nephew of Oom Paul Kruger, was in Jeffersdn City the other day. He told a reporter there that a recent letter from a friend of his in South Africa indicated that the Boers had been preparing for the present war ever since 1894, a big dynamite factory in Pretoria having been engaged five years in turning out ammunition with a view to readiness for anticipated trouble with England."

PRE-HISTORIC CIVILIZATION. [Newspaper Article] — Amador Ledger — 2 February 1900

PRE-HISTORIC CIVILIZATION. Today's Desolation Was Once a Garden Shown By Evidences of Ancient Irrigation. Ono of the most marvelous engineering accomplishments of ancient or modern times is shown in discoveries that were made last year in : tho lava beds of New Mexico. Thousands of years ago, tho geologists tell us, a system of irrigation reservoirs and ditcjlies was operated in the Southwest which is not paralleled by anything of this nature in the United States today. The builders, of these woi»ks, a people older than the Pueblo race, cultivated thousands of acres of now arid territory. Reservoirs were constructed at the bases of mountains to catch the flood-waters before thoy wore absorbed into the looso and bottomless sand, and the ditches where thoy ran through sand, were cemented- to prevent tho water's escape. Lava has flowed into somo of those ditches, once filled with sparkling water iiu' centuries gone by. What can have been the history of this prehistoric race or what can...

Irrigation Paragraphs. [Newspaper Article] — Amador Ledger — 2 February 1900

Irrigation Paragraphs. The stampede to enter the Oklahoma public lands, upon their opening t« settlement, is a matter of recent history. The government has between 70,000,000 and 100,000,000 acres of arid public lands which can bo reclaimed through irrigation and made more than the lands of Oklahoma; and the government could sell its lands to settlers just as fast as it reclaimed it. Such important works as storage reservoirs should be built as international improvements and permanently maintained by the State or Federal government. This would givo absolute assurance of safety to communities farming the lands below them. Without such a guarantee of stability, the settler in reservoir systems cannot be overcome, for the irrigator is always at the mercy of the reservoir. It is well said, why should the arid West not have its shaiv of the great sums of money which am liein;* expended by the national government for internal improvement/. What good reason can bo advanced why the western ...
