Milk as a Remedy. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 17 October 1873

Milk as a Remedy. Considerable has heen lately said in medical journals concerning the value of milk as a remedial agent iv certain diseases. An interesting article upon this subject lately appeared in the London Milk Journal, in which it is stated on the authority of Dr. Benjamin Clarke that in tbe East Indies warm milk is used to a |PMI extent as a specific for diarrbic. A pint every lour hours will check th-- most violent diarrlue, stomach ache, incipientleholtra and dysentery. Tbe milk should never be boiled, but only heated sufficiently to be agreeably warm, not too hot to drink. Milk which has been boiled is unfit for use. This writer gives several instances to show the value of this simple substance in arresting this disease, among which is the following. The writer says: 'It has never failed in curing in six to twelve hours, ami T bave tried it, I should think, fifty times. J bave also given it to a dying man who had been subject to dysentery for eight months, laterly accomp...

Scientific Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 18 October 1873

Scientific Notes. SUCCESSFUL TRANSFUSION OF Blood.- A successful case of immediate transfusion of blood hy Dr. AIbini, of Naples, is related by Dr. MacEwen in the last number of the Glasgow Medical Journal. The transfusion was from the carotid artery of a limb into the veins of a lady exhausted by hemorrhage. A gum elastic tube about half a metre in length was inserted into the artery of the lamb, and placed in communication wtth the vein opened in the arm of the patient. At the extremity of a similar tube two tubes of glass were joined in such a manner as to remain lixed oil one side of tlie exposed and incised artery of the lamb, and on the olher to the denuded vein of the lady, into which tlie transfused blood flowed. Dr. Albini renounces henceforth tlie usual syringe, preferring to use the natural pump, the animal itself, which with vigorous contractions, is able to impel a liberal supply of blood into the arm of a patient, Alcoholic Epilepsy. a new res* son for refraining from ...
