FINKBEINER Continued from Page 1 itol, where the bill has been introduced — and rejected — each year for nearly 30 years. The state House last year passed the bill 61-37, with six Republicans joining 55 Democrats to pass it. It failed in the Senate, where two Democarats joined 23 Republicans in defeating the measure. Representative Ed Murray, a Democrat, one of Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, a Democrat, said she wants to see "the num- bers on the board" before she will cele- brate passage of a gay civil rights bill after nearly three decades of debate over the meas- ure in the Washington Legislature. i four gay men in the House and the foremost advocate of the perennial legislation, said he is now "cautiously excited" about prospects for passage this year. Finkbeiner, who stepped down as Senate minority leader last year, supported the bill once before when he was a House member and a Democrat. "It's an issue I've struggled with since I've been in the Legislature," Finkbeiner sai...

United Kingdom in his New Year's homily for enacting the new Civil Partnership Act, which grants registered same-sex couples the rights and obligations of marriage. Speaking at St. Mary's Cathedral in Edinburgh, O'Brien said the government had "promoted alternative lifestyles while undermin- ing values which for generations have been treas- ured," London's The Times reported. "Human societies throughout history and across cultures have flourished only when they have built their human relationships on the rock of marriage," he said. A spokesman for the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association said O'Brien's remarks "could lead to an escalation of violence against gay people." Muslim leader says U.K. partnership law is a bad omen for society Sir Iqbal Sacranie, the head of the Muslim Council of Britain, has denounced the United Kingdom's new Civil Partnership Act that took effect in December. It grants registered same-sex couples the rights and obligations of marriage. Speaking to the BBC...

failed to attend a meeting to hear directly from black gay men on what new strategies we should try." Despite the poor attendance, the meeting in Austin gave black gay activists the beginnings of a plan, Walker said. "The consensus was that we have to look at building the capacity of the black gay communi- ty to respond to HTV and other crises. Black gay men have to be leading the charge in helping their community stay alive and healthy. We have to begin creating the infrastructure necessary to sup- port organizations indigenous to the black gay male community. ... We want some of these other, older organizations to realize that black gay men are not trying to be separatist. They just want to be the leaders in the organizations targeting their community." The African American Resource Center of Dallas, formerly Renaissance III, was one of the few indigenous organizations ever formed in Texas to serve the black gay male community. It folded late last year following allegations of fin...

And all this time I thought it was portly gals, such as Ricky Lake circa "Hairspray," who had the great personalities. I guess you learn some- thing new every day. Not everyone is buying the silly spin. "There is a saying that you'll never meet an ugly drug rep," the University of Michigan's Dr. Thomas Carli told the Times. Before we get upset at the pharmaceutical companies, we should look in the mirror. The most important decisions we often make have more to do with the superficial than the serious. For example, author Malcolm Gladwell wrote in "Blink," his best selling book, that when it comes to choosing CEOs, the size of the body is more important that that of the brain: "In the US. population, about 14.5 percent of all men are six feet or taller. Among CEO's of Fortune 500 companies, that number is 58 per- cent. Even more striking, in the general American population, 3.9 percent of adult men are six-foot-two or taller. Among my CEO sam- ple, almost a third were six-foot-two or...

life+styledining Bon appetit Stephan Pyles returns to the kitchen for his first new restaurant in four years. Was it worth the wait? By Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer How's this for self-confidence: After making a career with signal restau- rants like Routh Street Cafe/Baby Routh, Star Canyon and Aqua Knox, Stephan Pyles, the top of Dallas' top chefs, final- ly came up with a name for a restaurant that suits his reputation: Stephan Pyles "I'm getting older, so I needed a name I could remember," grins the legendary gay chef. He's spent the last year developing the concept for Stephan Pyles, the style of which he describes as "new millennium Southwestern cuisine." "You know the difference between Tex-Mex and Southwestern?" the fifth generation Texan asks rhetorically. 'Tifteen dollars. So, I call it 'new millennium Southwestern.' Doesn't that sound like it would be worth five dollars more?" And then some. As one of the founders of Southwestern cook- ing — the modern Texas culinary st...

TAKEI BOLDLY GOES ON STERN 0 Stern VOICE OF PRIDE: Takei becomes Sirius announcer. The first voice listeners heard on Howard Stern's debut on Sirius satellite radio was newly out actor George Takei, famous for his Mr. Sulu role on "Star Trek." The radio host and Take: struck up an unusual friendship during Stern's terrestrial days. Takei officially came out in October 2005, but Stern listeners were hardly sur- prised. For the past two years, Stern had playfully teased Takei about his seemingly hoity-toity and persnickety ways. Takei, who has very distinct voice for radio, will act as Stern's official announcer. For the first week, Stern said Takei will broad- cast live from the studio. From there, Takei will be heard presumably on pre-recorded bits. Takei dis- played a good sense of humor as Stern probed him about his recent coming out. They engaged in frank discussions about sex, which didn't seem to throw the 68-year-old actor. Live on Sirius from 7 a.m.-noon on Channels Howard 10...

WANTED: BLOWERS AND BANGERS Did you know that North Texas has its own drum and bugle corps? Formed in the summer of 2004 by gay executive direc- tor Chris Green, the Frontier Drum & Bugle Corps holds audi- tions at its open house on Saturday. Green says about a third of the membership is gay and is open to musicians of all skill levels. Last year, about 55 mem- bers marched in the Drum Corps Associates Championships, which were held Sept. 2-4 in Scranton, Pa. Frontier placed 16th in the "open class" competition. For the past two years, Frontier has performed at the Turtle Creek Chorale's Christmas Concert series. This year, Green hopes to boost membership to 90 members. Green says most of last year's horn line hadn't touched their instruments in five, sometimes 20 years. The group welcomes beginning woodwind play- ers and those learning brass instruments for the first time. "Talent isn't the basis for member- ship. Determination, hard work and a passion for music and colorguard ...

Nfe+styleart Brushing up Texas abstractionist David Aylsworth blends Broadway, optimistic colors There's nothing worse than listening to intel- lectuals discuss artwork. You hear high-faultin' vocabulary like "quixotic," "archetypal" and head-spinning terms like "collective uncon- scious." Fortunately, gay painter David Aylsworth avoids abstract language — especially when describing his own work. "It usually sounds so boring or stupid, but my tastes run toward bright colors. And there are some shapes that I keep using over and over: swirly and bulbous, phallic kind of things," he explains. "I think people that look at my paint- ings and comment on the layers. There's a lot of gunk underneath the final layer." BRUSH WITH GREATNESS: David Aylsworth's tastes include bright colors and phallic shapes. Aylsworth will be present on Friday at an opening-night reception of an exhibit of his work at The Holly Johnson Gallery. Standing 6'4" tall and a habitual smiler, Aylsworth resembles the v...
