MISCELLANY, ORIGINAL AND SELECT. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 25 March 1826

MISCELLANY, .ORIGINAL AND SELECT. The King entertained a large and grand party at Windsor, on Saturday the 15th October, to meet the distinguished Russian foreigners then in England. By a late census of the population in Britain, 313 persons had attained the age of 100 years and upwards, namely, 1061 male«, and 207 females. The ribbon vacant by the death of Lord Carlisle, is expected to be given to the Duke of Buckingham. Lord Talbot, or Lord W. Bentinck is named as successor to Lord Amherst, in the Government of India. Sir Robert Ker Porter is appoint- ed to a diplomatic situation in South America. Mr. Thomas Moore has published a life of Sheridan, which displays much talent. We regret however to observe, that from feelings, no doubt of a private nature, Mr. JMoorc has given a very unfair colour to the liberality of the King towards that distinguished scholar and statesman. We shall give copious extracts from this inte- resting work. A dreadful accident occurred at the launch of th...

CAPTURE OF THE BUSH-RANGERS [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 1 April 1826

CAPTURE OF THE BUSH-RANGERS Monday was a memorable day in the annals of bushranging in this Colony. Early in the morning, M'Kenncy, Brown, and Gregory, were brought down from New Norfolk, which they had left at midnight, and safely lodged in gaol. They were apprehended on the banks of the Big River, on the evening of Friday previous.   Having discovered traces of the villians, Mr. Ayton very prudently divided his party, by which means it would appear they were nearly surrounded. Brown fired a shot at Mr. Ayton, (which providentially missed its aim), and immediately betook himself with his companions to flight. M'Kenncy however being lame, from a blow in the ankle, which he had received about a week before from a horse in jumping over a stream; was not able to run so fast, for which cause the shot was fired by Brown, he and Gregory being unwilling to leave their associate behind. Dunne and Cody fled with instant precipitation, attentive only to themselves; the latter rec...
