The Eden Free Press. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21, '99 [Newspaper Article] — Eden Free Press and Eden District Advertiser — 21 June 1899

jjUe«i |fr^ fms, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21, '«9 rr,HE world of British aristocracy J- has moved a good deal since the Countess of Warwick wrote her paper on the "Splendid Paupers" of Kcglaud. It would almost seem now as if the most useless of these coroueted nobodies would get a corner of the economic system in which they nii^ht find, if not rest for the soIps of their feet, employ ment for their hands. Lord Deuce Ace has almost had bis J»y, and the eprigs of nobility are discover ing that if they will not work I neither can they eat. »Ve have! now lords and ladies making their bows before the footlights of fashionable theatres. We hare great noblemen like Lord Warwick ' farming out their estates to profit able uses, and living in seclusion on the rents paid by wealthy parvenus ' for the occupation o£ ancestral hails, j Above all, we have l-dies of the severe caste that marks the blood of the Vere de Veres keeping flower and fancy shops in London, where they make an hocest living in compet...

THE CHURCH ARMY. DEDICATING A VAN. [Newspaper Article] — Eden Free Press and Eden District Advertiser — 21 June 1899

THE CHURCH A.KMY. DEDICATING A VAN. Some time &30 it was announced that the Char, h Army, as one of the evangelising bodies of the Oharch of England, was anxious to extend the sphere of its work in to the bush districts. With thisend in view it decided to send out mis sionaries from Melbourne. There was some formidable difficulties in the way, but the chief of these was overcome when Mr. Griffiths prom ised a vchiclts for the purpose. The offer was thankfully accepted, but the army officers were still in a quandary. A van, though an ad mirable gift of'its kiud, is maufest ly useless without motive power. A horse was wanted, and as the army has only sufficient funds to meet working expenses, the prob lem was how to provide one. How ever, the Archdeacon undertook to supply the army's wants, and the whole outfit—horse harness aud van is now ready for active Bervice. To the lay mind it wovld appoar that nothing further was needed, but the army authorities though it desir able, b...

THE PERTHSHIRE SAVED. [Newspaper Article] — Eden Free Press and Eden District Advertiser — 21 June 1899

THE PERTHSHIRE SAVEU.l' A Standard telegram reports that the steamer Talune picked up the Perthshire on Tuesday last after a long journey of between six and seven hundred miles. Towing was commenced, but thn weather was most unfavorable, fierce winds aid dangerous seas imperilled the ves sels from time to time. The Taluno stood the strain splendidly, and brought the Perthshire safely to port at 7 o'clock on Monday morn ing after one of the most remark able feats of towing ever known in shipping annals. It is roughly r • timated that the salvage will amount to about £20,000, of which amount the captain of the Talune is entitled to one-sixth. All hknds on board the Perthshire are particularly well and happy, and the vessol is not a bit worse for her experience. The Perthshire anchored off Neutral Bay about seven o'clock on Monday morning; She was the object of spocial interest by passengers in the ferry boats coming early to town, who cheered the Talune lustily. It appears that the Ta...
