Official Wheat Estimate. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 24 December 1900

Official Wheat Estimate It is extremely satisfactory to find that the wheat harvest is now likely to be considerably larger than seemed probable a ; lew weeKs ago. rsenenciai rains extended throughout all the wheat areas, and though too late to save the crop in some places where the plant had already been cut for hay, they have considerably in creased the yield that would otherwise have been obtained. Estimates based on inquiries made by our correspondents a month back gave a probable yield of 15,700,000 bushels. There were some who thought the estimate too high. Now, however, Mr Cogldan gives the probable yield as 17, 1 95,000 bushels, being at the rate of 12 -6 bushels per acre. If this be obtained it will be 4,590,000 bushels in excess of last year's fjroduction, which was the argest until that time. A yield of 12 6 bushels per acre is greater than has been reaped since 1893, when 15 bushels per acre were garnered, and this greatly exceeds the general I average of 9.9 bushels for...

CYCLING NOTES. AuSTItAMAN AND ExcLlSlI. Another cyclist lias succeeded in crossing the Australian Continent from Port Darwin to Adelaide. The plucky rider in this instance is a Mr A. H. Lennox, a Northern Territory Missionary, who roile from sea to sea, a distance of 20GO miles in eiirht weeks. Australian racing men like the American riders are now following the fashion set by the European cracks in returning to the use of a wider handle bars. There are two big advant ages in tha wider bars, viz. — more con trol over steering, and more comfort. Jack Green, the English cyclist, brought out a pair of the latest pattern racing bars with him, the result being . that our cracks are all ordering bars a la Green's. Apropos of J. Gre^i, this rider's in juries are fast mending, and he ex pects to have his arm out of splints this week. Christinas five Great Influx into Sydney. i| After a dull and threaten- J ing day, Christinas Eve was 4| ushered in by a drizzling rajn, {1 which commenced about 7 '| o'clock. This drawback, how- k ever, did not damp the enthu- .J siasm of the citizens, who | turned out iu large numbers to -a promenade the streets and get | a casual glimpse of the shops :-| in their Christmastide aspect. J Taking the block bounded by M Market and King streets and ''''I George and Pitt streets, the I congested state of the pedes- | trian traffic furnished a good | idea of what the state of things :| is likely to be on New Year's J Night. The people in many I cases found it impossible to I keep to the pathways, and | therefore invaded the road, 1 rendering the progress of ve- | hides difficult and at times ij dangerous. \
