Arrival of His Excellency Captain Fitzgerald. WE rejoice at being at length enabled to announce to our readers, the welcome in- telligence of the arrival of His Excellency Captain Fitzgerald, whose presence at the head of affairs in this colony, has so long and ardently been desired. The Trusty left Plymouth on the 18th March, and was detained at the Cape 30 days, the greater portion of her cargo being for that place, much destined for this port being shut out. It is stated that another vessel was to sail for this port in May. Insurances on goods by the Trusty could only be ef- fected at war rates. English newspapers to the 22nd March, have been received, ha- ving overtaken the ship at the Cape.

The Editor of this Joivrnal invites the free expres sion of the opinions of his Correspondents, but can- not be held responsible for them. The name and address of the writer must accompany eachxiom munication. To the Editor of the " Independent Journal." Sir,-The observations in your paper last week relative to raising potatoes from sprouts, and the very bad character of the crop this year (resembling the disease so ruinous in Europe) induce me to think the following fact may not be unacceptable, as having coming under my own knowledge, and possibly, suggesting a renovation of the plant, so far as disease in the tuber is concerned.' Several years ago in Ireland, observing the heaps of shoots plucked from potatoes in store and thrown away, I resolved to plant one of them, which I did in rich garden mould but without manure. The bort was that called in Ulster the *' Caledo- nian " a large, almost black, and very pro- ductive variety. As the plant grew I amused myself by earthing it up...

Wreck of the "Vixen.»» We regret to announce the wreck of the schooner Vixen, belonging to this port, when almost within sight of her owner's residence. The catastrophe was discovered by the boats of the Fremantle whalers, who found the north coast strewed with the wreck and cargo. From her mail, which has been found, we gather the following European intelligence, which we in- tend completing from our last advices up to the 1st of May, in a Supplement on Monday, being of too interesting a nature to bear condensation : The leading events in Europe are of a most remarkable character, the revolution- ary movement still makes progress. There was war in Denmark between the Danes and Germans, for Schleswig; a col- lision took place at Flensburg but the re- sult was not known. The Danish govern- ment has called on England to assist her against the Germans. Fears were enter- tained in Hamburg that the Danes would blockade the Elbe except to English vessels. THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. "Vox populi, vox Dei." SATURDAY, AUGUST 12, 1848. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 19 August 1848

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. " Voxpopuli, vox Dei." SATURDAir^ö^sFl2ri848. THE administration of Captain Fitzgerald has commenced. May it he as successful as to the colony its opening is auspicious. May colonists of every class have cause to pronounce it fortunate. How gratifying a retrospect awaits His Excellency if, ex- perienced as he is, he attends to the coun- sel of those only who, instead of offering a vacillating, antiquated, and blighting advice, will, promptly, though thoughtfully, assist him in the discharge of that chief duty of rulers-for which alone they are placed over us-the real happiness of every class of the community ! So far as opportunity has occurred to develop the disposition of our new Gover- nor, and so far as report states, there is abundant reason to augur well of his capa- city for governing. We hear of his frank, firm, and manly hearing in the discharge of his duties. The discretion and self possession evinced on the only public oc- casion we have had oppor...

LATEST INTELLIGENCE. Important Battle between the Danes and Germans. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 19 August 1848

LATEST INTELLIGENCE. Important Battle between the Danes and Germans. We gather ,the following from the Sup- plement to the Straits Times of the 7th June: Later accounts of the affair between the Banes and the Holstein troops, on the 10th April, show it to have been important. The Holsteiners, 10,000 strong, retired on Bau from Elemsburg, dislodged by the prepa- rations for a bombardment from the har- bor, which was full of Danish gun-boats. But the Danes came on in superior num- bers, and drove all before them, despite a stubborn resistance. Two German regi- ments were almost annihilated ; and the lulled on each side were more than 2,000. After their victory the Danes pushed south- wards, and entered Schleswig at two in the morning of the 11th. The Danish troops in Schleswig are now 20,000. The Prus sians remain on the Holstein frontier, in- creasing their numbers. It appears that the students were completely sacrificed in consequence of the ill-judged military po- sitions assigned ...

LATE EUROPEAN NEWS. [From the March Journals.] The French Revloution. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 19 August 1848

LATE EUROPEAN NEWS. [From the March Journals.] The French Revloution. A very violent scene toole place in the council of the Provisional Government on Tuesday. In the course of their delibera- tion, a proposition was made by M. Ledru Rollin, which, not being approved by his colleagues, was rejected. Upon this M. Rollin threatened that if his propositions were not agreed to, he would call in the people assembled in the court, and force the Government to accede to it. M. Gar- nier Pages upon this, immediately rose, and drawing a pistol from his pocket, de- clared that if M. Rollin attempted to put his threat into execution, he would shoot him through the head ! The affair went no further, but when such scenes occur in the council, it cannot be expected that the members of the Government will work long together. M. Ledru Rollin has also raised a storm against the provisional government by the publication of a Circular of instructions to the Commissioners who had been sent to complete t...

Court of Requests. Before A. H. Stone, JEsq., Conwiissioner. Shaw v. Dempster. This case has excited a good deal of interest from the novelty of the proceedings. The account sued for was in the following terms : J. M. Dempster, to N. C. Shaw. 1847. Cash paid Mr. Harper. £7 14 cwt. 19 ibs. of hay delivered to Major Bush on Defendants account. £3 £10 The Defendant's plea was, that he had paid this sum to the Plaintiff, by a Bill which the Defendant negotiated with Mr. James Sinclair of the Bush Inn, Toodyay, and the case was adjourned for two suc- cessive Court days, at the request of the Defendant to procure the evidence of Sinclair. The Plaintiff claimed his costs for such days adjournment, and the Court adjudged the Defendant to pay £2 6s. viz £1 3s. for such days attendance. On the second day's hearing Mr. Dempster pro- duced an affidavit from James Sinclair who could not possibly attend.
