Wodonga & Towong Sentinel. "Awake! Arise!: Or be for ever fallen!" MILTON.   FRIDAY, APRIL 30, 1886: Tu? rule that in calling for tenders the lowest should be accepted is geneo rally recognised as the correct course, as this is the safest way to proevent favoritism, but this systmns can be ovcrdone, and if strictly followed would often end in financial loss and seamped or indiflfeent syorkmanshiip. The Towoug Shire Council must have found this out ere this, or they. are very slow to profit by experience.: The council seems to haveo mide it ani in fallible :rule to accept .the lowest tender for iill works, although in some cases experience has shown them thiat the lowest tenderer is incapable, of doing the work, sometimes from not understanding - tho plaits, and not having yisited the works, puts in a. ridiculously low te!lnder, ad after making ry start. tlhrows. up thioe job.; Othlers, again, have not the slightest knowledge of practical. road making, rnd conmpl...

DESTRUCTIVE FIRE IN SYDNEY STREET. [Newspaper Article] — Wodonga and Towong Sentinel — 7 May 1886

DESTRUCTIVE FIRE IN SYDNEY STREET.       For the past three or four years,     Wodonga has enjoyed an immunity from fire, there, having been no blaze of any description since the disastrous confla- gration in August, 1882, which left but the bare walls of the handsome rows of brick buildlings in Sydney street. On Wednesday morning, how- ever, a break in this chain occurred, which resulted in the total destruction, of Mr Edward Lord's butcher's shop and residence, besides a considerable amount of his furniture. Mr Lord was in his   shop, cutting up his usual supply of beef, prior to sending it out to his customers,   between half-past five and six o'clock, when he heard one of his sons raise the alarm of " Fire!" On looking out into the back, he discovered the flames in the boys' bedroom, making headway up the wall-plate and under the lining, and, having almost a complete hold of the &n...

(o0no01Tgit & `aCl' lig chilt i. "Alake! A:ise I u for ever f!lseria" _ T1 I.To . FRIDAY, MAY 7, 1886.     A i4 iy interesting correspondence has lately been published in the press upon the border duties between Vic torian ld South Australia. There is now ai large settlement in tihe Tattiara country, on the Victorian :side, and a. very considerable wheat prlodectioii; while such important townships as Nhill and Dimiboola have sprung up likd inushrooms during the past few years. But this difficulty has arisen. The Victorian farmers in the district desire to purchase their stores at Border Town and other places on the South Australian side which ' are within easy reach of water carriage and are situated in a coluntry where the Customs duties are incompasrably lighter than here. Our Viotorian' border storekeepers say "No I!' to this in the most decided manner. They are obliged to pay Customs duties for. goods purclthsed -wholesalo by thein, and they do...
