DISTIlICT AM) GENltRAL NEWS.w " Quite a now feature in the artesian water supply has developed itself, and it would seem as if Sale may procure all the leeches it requires from. the well in Macalister-st. We have very fine specimen which we .picked out of the trough a few days ago, and we are informed that it is nothing un usual to find them in lhrge numbers in the same place. It would be interesting. to know where they came from, or at how low a depth they can live, and perhaps some learned pundit, like Professor M'Coy for instance, could enlighten us. The leeches seem fine and healthy with long yellow stripes, and to all appearance would be well up to their work.--Mercury. .The appointment of Mr. John Barker as clerk of the Legislative Council and clerk of the Plarliaments, vice Mr. G.
