The Education Problem. [Newspaper Article] — Dookie and Katamatite Recorder — 11 June 1914

The Education Problem. The Australian Catholic Fede ration is issuing a leaflet dealing with the system of State educa tion in Victoria, and is also arranging for public meetings being held throughout the import ant centres of the State, in order that the educational claims may bo placed before the public. The Federation claims that a just system of State education should be acceptable to the whole of the citizens who have to con tribute towards its cost. During the 40 years that the present sys tem has been in vogue, Catholic taxpayers have received no return for over £4,500,000 contributed by them towards educational expen diture. They have also expended in the erection and maintenance of their own schools over £2000000 and they ask that for the secular instruction imparted to children in Catholic schools an allowance should be made out of the moneys which Catholic taxpayers have contributed, in order to provide free education for their children. The Federation emphasises the poin...

What It Cots To Shoot Big Game. [Newspaper Article] — Dookie and Katamatite Recorder — 11 June 1914

What It Cots To Shoot IJij; Game. Now Zealand has its deer-shoot ing; the Northern Territory offers something in tlio way of buffalo; £ind thore are various kangaroo hunting' grounds in New South Wales; but for trie most part Aus tralasia has little to'present in the nature of big-game shooting. Therefore, an article on the cost of making an excursion into tfio nearest big-game country—that is, Africa—and the method and procedure on arriving there, will be of interest to those of our readers whose ambitions lie in that direction. Such an article appears in the June issue of "Life," just a hand, and it is also of interest to goneral readers, for for it describes the picturesque aspects of the country, and the prospects that lie in it for the trader and the hunter. The author of the article—which is the first of three—is Mr. G. E. Archer Russell a well known Adelaide man who put in three strenuous and exciting years in mid-Africa. His photographs are excellent. Tungamah Water Trust. The monthly meeting of the above took placo last week, Com. Fell presiding. Willis Little, Benalla, wrote that he was in favor of the head work of the Nillahcootie water scheme being made a national work, but was afraid, according to Act of Parliament, that the people would have to at least con tribute the interest and sinking fund to L50,000, the cost. Ways and means would, therefore, have to be considered—that is, the peo ple requiring the water would have to contribute their quota in rates to the said amount.—Re ceived. The secretary Yabba Farmers' Union wrote stating that at a meeting of the union it was de cided to support the Trust in an endeavor to induce the Govern ment to construct a water storage at Nillahcootie, as a national work. Also, that the union would assist in any way on a deputa tion.—Received. J. A. Carruthers, St. James, for warded his resignation as pumper, as he was going to Cobram.—Ac cepted, with regret. Jos.
