The recent geological explorations of Prrfessor El-ward FuIll, in Palestine, indicate that the Dead Sea formerly extended tr o hundred miles from north to south. anrdstoo-d some fourteen hundred feet higher than its present level. At that period the country enjoyed a mucth more copious rainfall than it does now, and the climate must hirve r-. sembled that which now prevails in the lBritish Islands. Lebanon was perpltually snow-clad, and claciers occupied its villaces, while other districts were subject to volcanic disturbances. The Grecian authorities have forblidden the importation into Greece of trees, plants, fruits, and even hbaled hay, from America, Africa, Ar=tralia, Asia Minor, or any other part of Europe except Hlolland, 'ielvinm, Denmark, 'Norway and Sweden. The object is to keep the dreaded phylloxtera insect out of Grecian vineyards.

The Farmer. Live Stock in the United States. [Newspaper Article] — Morwell Advertiser and Weekly Chronicle — 23 April 1887

~be Parnier. Live Stock in the linited States The reports of the wintering of stock om the great Western plains have now nearly all corne in, and vary consideribly,as usual. The. winter loss in horsesis moderate, but in cattle very large, running in some districts from 25. to 50 per cent., and in few helrds still higher. The weather mostly through January and Fehruary was uncommonly severe, antl un usually so in South Carolina and adjoining. Northern Texans. Here the losses do not gene. rally average over two to five per cent., but d uri n the past winter they are reported much greater, but how much it is difficult to say,. as the breeders are very chary in acknow. ledging them, striving to make out as few as possible. In sheep, the losses are very heavy; entire flocks have gone. This deplorable destruction of domestic animals bred on the great Western plains is rwcing almost entirely to the inability of ob taining food, in consequence of the grass bcinh covered so deeply with snow ...

Animal Flower. [Newspaper Article] — Morwell Advertiser and Weekly Chronicle — 23 April 1887

The inhabitants of. St. Lucie have l:tely discovered a most singular plant. IIt a cavern of that isle, near the sea, is a lorge hasin, frot twelve feet to fifteen feet deep, the water of which is very brtckish, and the hottom ceomposed of rociks. Fromtlhese at oIl ti!mes proceed certain so bstances, which present at first sight beautiful flowers of atbright shininng color, nd p etty nearly reseibliug our inmarigolds, only that their tintis more lively: These seelting flowers, 'on the approach of a hand or instrument, retire like a snail out of sight. On, e?xatm inintg their substance closely, thoro.rppears in the middle of the disc four brown fila ments--reseinlling spiders' legs, which move round a kind of petals with a pretty brisk and spontaneous motion. These legs have pincers to ,eiz.e their prey; and, upon seizing it, the yellow\ petals inmediately close, so that it cann;tot escape. Under the exterior of the flower is a hIrosV,.stalk of the size of a raven's quill, and which ap...

VEGETARIAN COOKERY. [Newspaper Article] — Morwell Advertiser and Weekly Chronicle — 30 April 1887

Are fried puffs, rmade o llpuff-paste and jam or fresh fruit. VEGETA~IIAN COOKERY. " Vegetarinnism is bmat for health, being pure and rurifying," writes Dr. Nicholls in his "Penny Vegetarian Cookery." "Fruits purify the blood. Flesh is always liable to be diseased, and at its best hbs a diseasing tendency. Cattle and pigs fattened fir food are liable to tubercle, scrofula, tapeworm, nod other parasites, and the diseases of pigs, sheep, cattle, Be., are transmissable. A vege. table diet alleviates, and often cures, scrofu= fulous, cancerous and consumptive tendon. ,ies. " And this liability of man to acquire the diseases of animals on wlich he feeds be cooes a serious matter when the unnatural hrceling and feeding of animals destined to be killed and eaten produce widespread epi demics. It is surely much safer to live on such pare and healthy foods as fruit, grain, puote, and vegetables than to run the risk of eating tie bodlies of diseased animals, when a vegeotrian diet is found to...
