A NEW INDUSTRY. [Newspaper Article] — The Mining Record and Grenfell General Advertiser — 12 October 1867

A NEW INDUSTRY. The StatUHca) Register which is drawn tip annually by the Registrar-General, has just been published, and as usual furnishes some very useful information. Thcso statistical roturns, giving as they do n tolerable cor* roct picture of the state of the country, are of great ? value. Looking to tho agricultural returns wo find that in 18(10 the nutnbor of producing 0,220,027 bushels } and, taking thi# yield as a fair averoge production, it would require ucarly double that quantity of acrcage to supply wheat sufficient for the whole population. It appears that orer £700,000 woro sent out of tho country for cereals during the year. . It follows from this that there would be plenty of room for profitable enterprise iu wheat growing, whero the general markets wore acccssablo to the farmer. Aa it is. there is a deficiency in the metropolis, aud a consequent aecesiilf to import, while in mauy oountry places the wheat market is completely glutted- Nothiug will remedy this state...
