Correspondence. (TO THE EDITOR OF THE BEGA GAZETTE.) [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 13 January 1866

(TO THE EdXTOR OF THE BeGA GAZETTE.) Mr Dear Sir,—Several paragraphs having appeared in your useful paper, in reference tc the proposed union Church or House of Worship at Merimbula, will you be kind enough to do file the favor to insert in your next im< prcssion the following remarks in reference to the. last paragraph, to which Sir. Manning has already replied, and thus pour a little oil on these troubled waters* I do not think that that paragraph altogether does jus tice to the point at issue, as it appeal's to be founded only on partial information; and is thus calculated to give a wrong impression. 1. You say, " The population of Merimbula £lnd the surrounding neighborhood does not exceed twenty souls, wlio belong to different religions and sects." I believe the population is nearer seventy souls, and consists (as the inhabitants have themselves informed me) principally, if no! entirely, of members of the Church of England and Church of Rome. 2. I believe that it has...

NEW YEAR'S DAY VISITING. Washington, D. C., January 2nd, 1862. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 13 January 1866

NEW YEAR'S DAY YISITING. I Washington, D. C., January 2nd, 1862. On New Year's day, my boy, the General of the Mackerel Brigade desired me to make a few calls with him ; and appeared at my lodgings in a confirmed state of kid gloves, which he bought for the express purpose of making-a joke. "A happy New Year to yon, my Duke of Wellington," says I. " Yon look as frisky as a spring lamb." Immediately a, look of intense meaning came over his Orinthian face, and he remarked with awful solemnity: "Thunder! you might better call me a I goat, my Prushian blue, seeing that ISe | got a couple of kids on hand just now." 1 The joke was a good article in the glove line, my boy, and I don't think that the [general had been studying over it more 'than four hours before we met. We made our first call at a house where the ladies were covered with smiles as with garment, and remarked that the day was fine. The general smiled in return, until his profile reminded me of a cracked tea pot; and says he:...

BLOCKADE OF THE CHILIAN PORTS. THE BLOCKADE RUN BY 23 VESSELS. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 13 January 1866

BLOCKADE OF THE CHILIAN PORTS. |the blockade run by 23 vessels. {From Ike Olago Times, December 22.) The barque Record arrived at Port Chalmers yesterday forenoon, after'a pas sage of seventy-one days from Valparaiso, which port she left on October 10th. She brings a cargo of 600 tons of flour, con signed to Messrs. Bright Brothers and Co., of Dunedin. Her commander, Captain Grange, corroborates the accounts which have already been received as to the blockade of the Chilian ports by the; Spanish iieet, and reports the consequent prevalence of much popular excitement throughout Chili, especially among the communities more immediately affected by the blockade. Tlie Spanish frigates were constantly on the coast, and previous to the departure of the Record they had succeeded in cap turing ten vessels. The Record was in Valparaiso for ten days after loading, waiting a chance to (pass the blockading fleet, and, in company with twenty-three other vessels, she put to sea on a dull foggy mor...

Four or five shillings so spent would save pounds in the amount of the tender.—Ed. B. G-.]—The present dry weather is most favorable for the job, and there are plenty of teams unemployed.—I have heard of hogs, dumps, green backs, &c., &c., being employed as a circulating medium, but here we have quite a novel commodity to represent the iieedful : forty-acre blocks, although not very portable, is commouly used here instead of money. What can peo ple do if the means of making money no longer exists ? tfliei direful effects of the drought will sacrifice many an acre, if rain does not soon come down. God grant that it may. THE MINISTRY. (From the Herald.) A supplement to the Government Gazette was published on Thursday after noon, announcing that the vacant Ministe rial appointments of Secretary for Lands and Colonial Treasurer had been filled. Mr, John Robertson has returned to the office of Secretary for Lands: and Mr. Marshall Burdekin has been ajfpointed Colonial Treasurer. In consequence of these fresh appointments fresh elections will take place for West Sydney and for the Wil liams. Several days must elapse before the new Ministers can be re-elected, as their seats will have to be declared, vacant at the meeting of the Assembly, «The Election Act only authorises the Speaker to issue a writ of ejection without waiting for the seat fco be declared vacant when the recess is longer than a week, and the adjournment of the House on Tuesday last was for that time. The Ministry, a.« now re-constructed, is as follows:— Colonial Secretary and Premier, Mr. Cowper; Secretary for Lands, Mr. Robert son; Secr...
