The Overlander. (See Illustration.) [Newspaper Article] — The Newsletter: an Australian Paper for Australian People — 1 December 1900

The Oyerlander. (See Illustration,) Take away your ledger— a pest upon your stool, Banish deBk and day-book, the yard stick and the rule, Let who will drive the quill, or at the counter stand — Give to me, rooming free, life on the overland ! The drover's life is jolly — the bushman wanders free— Though some may cull it folly, the over land for me. Rbfuain. ?Society's customs are galling, I long for a liberty grander ; I henr the old bush voices calling, Oh ! come back again, Overlander ! What use dandy fashion?, what matter . stylish clothes — Starch cuffs and collars, cut back where no one knows ; While you sleep, watch I keep, with reius loose in my hand— All bo still, air fo chill, night on the overland ! By firelights burning brightly, the cattle camp I see Life's troubles taking lightly, the over land for me. I've no chiding sweetheart, 60 gaily ride along ; Sing no love-lorn ditties, but swing my greenhidethong Night and day, ail the way, one of a roving band, Creek and plain...

Kensington. [Newspaper Article] — The Newsletter: an Australian Paper for Australian People — 1 December 1900

Kensington. Fine weather and fair racing re warded the many who patronised the Kensington pony meeting on Wed nesday. Although two hot favorites in Two Up and True Color, came to grief, the metalhcians fared very badly during the afternoon. As Camerton carried 121b. over weight in the Fourteen-two Handicap, the books opened out and laid seven to one against him, but he won very cleverly from Truthful ; the hot favorite, True Color, finishing in the ruck. The sti wards are rightly determined to put down nckless and foul riding, A. Albrccht was disqualified for twelve months for the manner in which he rode Dryad in the Four teen-one Handicap. These are offences which the police authorities ought to take notice of. Results: — Fourteen-three: Y. Not, 8st. 21b. (D. Malone), 1 ; The Comet, 2. Fourteen-one : Dryad, 9st. 61b. Rosebery Park. [Newspaper Article] — The Newsletter: an Australian Paper for Australian People — 1 December 1900

Rosebery Park. There was a very large attendance at the above meeting on Tuesday last, large fields and fair racing being the order of the afternoon. Backers had' all the worst of the business, as Rosedale, the winner of the Trial Welter, was the only ' neddy' whose number was hoisted first. Flower Girl was greatly fancied in the Fifteen Hands Handicap, but falliug she brought another dangerous one in The Desert to grief, and Disfigured had thus very little difficulty in scoring a win from As sociation and Lily. Results : — Trial Welter : Rosedale, 9st 121b (Merritt), 1 ; Premier, 2 ; Margaret, 3. Fourteen-one : Myalba, 9st (Whitbread), 1 ; Amber, 2 ; Har . mony, 3. WITHIN THE RING. [Newspaper Article] — The Newsletter: an Australian Paper for Australian People — 1 December 1900

WITHIN THE RING. A fine lusty old guffaw went up in the Assembly when the speeches of Messrs. Barton, Wise and M'Millan at Bathurst were read. There was scarce one man of any prominence who did not enjoy the spontaneous revelation of a com mon effort on the part of those worthies to get into place and power without the inconvenience of being questioned as to their prin ciples. Members generally agreed with the accommodating trio that it was inconvenient to have the common herd, the electors, using the microscope in search of principle or policy. To get there — that was recog nised as the Barton-' Wise- M'Millan platform, as announced from Bat hurst. Never mind about high or low taxes ; or about conservative or liberal principles. ' To get into the Federal Parliament,' with a strong backing — that was the key note of the patriotism of the great self-sacrificing party. It was agreed anions: members that Mr. M'Millan had shattered his chances for Rand wick- Waver ley. With regard to Mr...

The Newsletter. A Critical, Social, Dramatic, Sporting, Political and General Newspaper for the people. NEITHER BY FEAR, NOR BY FAVOR, BUT BY TRUTH ALONE The City Elections. [Newspaper Article] — The Newsletter: an Australian Paper for Australian People — 1 December 1900

The, Reicslettcr. \ Critical, Social, Dramatic, Sporting, Political and General newspaper ror tbe People. NI'ITIII-K It V KEAK, NOR BY KAVOR, lil'T 11V TRUTH AI.ONIC. The City Elections. Before the next issue of The Newsletter is in the hands of the public the first election of alder men for the City of Sydney under the new Act will be com pleted— for good or for evil. The electors have a responsible task before them, and it behoves every individual elector to carefully con sider the position — and the candi dates — before recording his vote, because upon that solitary vote much may depend. It should be a case of principles, not men ; the public good, not personal friend ship. The Citizens' Vigilance Committee has, perhaps, done some good work, and might have done more had it possessed more solid backbone, or been born a child of full time and not of acci dent. But, a' any rate, its inten tions were good, and its enquiries into the state of affairs municipal, hitherto existing, and ...

TURFIANA GOSSIP. (By The Wizard.J DIARY FOR THE WEEK. Saturday. — Moorefield Races. Monday. — Forest Lodge Pony Races. Tuesday. — Roseberry Park Pony Races. Wednesday. — Kensington R.C. Pony Races. Thursday. — Brighton Pony Races. The late Mr. John Tait's Fire works by Kelpie, I'rom Gaslight, by colonial Sir Hercules, enjoys the v.iiqne distinction of being the only colfc that has ever won two Victoria Derbys, namely, at the Spring Meet ing of 1867, and on the following -tc\y Year's Day. The latter, to which £ oOO was added, was given as a kind of memento of the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh, who, with some 20,000 people, saw the race run at Flemington. The Derby brought five to the post, 5 to 4 being laid on The Works, and he fairly ran away from the high priced Little Fish, Token, King fisher, and Balmoral. An hour afterwards came the Midsummer Handicap, and though he carried 8st. 61b., and was opposed by seven others, even money was taken about Fireworks. The colt fairly romped ...

IN FRONT AND BEHIND. THE WEEK'S PROGRAMME. [Newspaper Article] — The Newsletter: an Australian Paper for Australian People — 1 December 1900

IN FRONT AND BEHIND. (By Valentine Day. J THE WEE EC'S PROGRAMME. The Criterion — The Three Mus keteers. Her Majesty's — Macbeth. The Royal — II Trovatore and Faust. The Tivoli — Lottie Collins. The Lyceum — Fun on the Bristol. The Palace — A Message from Murs. The Town Hall — Organ Recitals. Cyclorama — Jerusalem and Illusions. In his 4-act adaptation to the stage of Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Adam Pierre attempts to reconcile the irreconcileable — to de pict on the stage a man who is by turns an angel of light and a demon of darkness — in face and form as well as in deeds and utterances. This duality of life may be successfully pictured in novels where effects are made slowly and with many minute strokes but not on the stage where results are achieved by a few bold strokes, strongly underlined. It is doubtful if even a playwright of the greatest genius, aided by all the con trivances ot science, could make the illusion convincing. As the Herald hints, it is also true tha...
