Sir,-In a letter, published in the Geclong Adver tiser, a short time since, it appears that by an ' abstract from the quatterly average of the Banks in the Colony of Victoria, from the day of Separation from New South Wales, (July, 1S51). to 30thlDeem ber, 1856," that five years' profits on deposits amounted to the enormous sum of £2,681,60S, or at the rate of £532,321 per annum, which is almost tan tamount to a loss of that sum yearly to this colony, arising from the fact that most of the shareholders in. those Banks being resident abroad and deriving this enormous dividend from the grasping operations of their fec servants here. I aeknowledge that probably only a portion of the profits may actually-have been derived from an un principled traifc in gold, hut may it not safely be asked why we cannot in Victoria establish a mint of our own, and retain ...
