A Trip Up the Fitzroy. A Vista of Beauty Spots. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 25 March 1922

A Trip Up the Fitzroy. A Vista of Beauty Spots. Though I have resided in Rockhaxnp ton for quite a number of years the opportunity of making an inspection of the upper reaches of the Fitzroy River never presented itself until quite recently. When the opportunity did come I took the chance proffered by Rabelars and grabbed it with both hands. I might say I had heard a good deal about the upper reaches of the river, for among my acquaint ances I number a good few who De long to the "mosquito fleet" and Picnic Point, the 18-Mile iBland, or even higher up. I used to listen to their glowing accounts of the beau tiful upper reaches, and then dis counted them a good deal- After hav ing made the trip I can quite under stand their enthusiasm, and also why Picnic Point is a favored spot for all the rowing club excursions. Our party consisted mainly of the Mayor and Aldermen pf Greater RocKhampton, City Council officials, a prominent American engineer, a South Brisbane Health Officer, and a co...

Drought and Dingoes Conditions in Far West. Although tbe gfeater part of Queensland has been drenched with rain during the summer. Nature has withheld her bounty from some places in the far westorn regions. Mr. J. Tully, of Gongie and Pinbilla raps, beyond Quilpie, who is at present visiting Brisbane, states that in his part of the country the drought holds sway. There has not been any rain For seven months. And the drought is not the only trouble. Diogoes are causing alarming havoc amongst stock. " We simply don't know what to do to combat the ravage; of tbe dogs," said Mr. Tully. " We have tried poison, traps, &c., but they all seem of little avail. The diogoes ate killing calves io scores, and also claimng many-victims among the sheep. 4s to tbe effects of the dry weather, I cannot say that stock have suffered severely; io fact they are in fair condition. We are de pending on wells and sub-artesian waters." Mr. Tully's parents live on an adjacent sta tion (Ray), bis fathe...
