THIS WEEK'S PICTURES. [Newspaper Article] — The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser — 4 February 1927

THtS WEEK'S PICTURES. "The Last Edition" is a compelling F.B.O. melodrama revolving around a newspaper office. The picture, which brings together again the brilliant acting of Ralph Lewis and the directorial genius of Emory Johnson, will be shown at Mount Barker to morrow evening. The popular character actor who did so much for liim by Mrs. Emijie Johnson has been given one of the strongest roles of his' career and executes It witli that sinv cerity which is characteristic of his work. The scene in which he hurls a heavy wrench into the whirring machinery of his beloved press rather than see it grind out the sensational story of his son's arrest, is a terrific piece of drama beautifully done. *, _e meeting of the father and son in goal is another high spot in the picture; and the romantic element, as por trayed by Prances Teague and Rex Lease, is to make history in the parts written pretty and thoroughly charm ing In support is "Love's Whirlpool," a spectacular production released b...

TOBACCO FIELDS AT MOUNT j BARKER. I Mr. S. B. Opie (Field Officer) re ports having recently visited Mount Barker during January, and found the growth of the tobacco crop very satisfactory. Plants are small, vary ing from eight inches to two feet high, and are of a vigorous, healthy color. Most areas are in need of cultivation, some not having been scarified since transplanting. The criousuess of this defect was pointed mt to growers and it is expected that it will be rectified' immediately. Plants should then contlne to make good growth. It was noted that an occasional plant had burst Into bud, due, most probably, to the hot spell jf the 9th to 14th January. Cutworms were very troublesome ;arlier In the season, causing growers to re-plant many plants which had been destroyed by the pest, but it has now practically ceased, and fields do not show signs of the depredations of the worms. Green caterpiUar motii, identified as Plusia Argentifera, Is causing growers to keep a watchful ;ye ...

RETURNED SOLDIERS LEAGUE. Frequent expressions of regret have been heard among "diggers" that no sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' league exists at Mount Barker, and it certainly amounts to a reflection, considering the number of returned men in and around the town. Fol 'owing on representation to the league, an effort is now being made to resuscitate what was in former years ■> healthy body. Already promises of support are most encouraging, and with interest stimulated and judicious i organising undertaken the prospects ■ of an active sub-branch are favorable. The proposal of re-forming will be discussed at a meeting of "diggers" in the Masonic Hall on Saturday evening at which two representatives from .the league will be present and speak.
