THISTLE ACT. An Act to make provision for the eradication of certain Thistle Plants and tne Bathurst Burr. [19th March 1856.] Whereas great injury and loss have been and are occasioned to the lands of this colony by the spread of the plant known as the thistle and it is desirable that measures be taken to prevent its further diffusion And whereas no such measures can be effectual unless some provision is made for securing its destruction notonly upon publio lands but also upon land which has become private property Be it therefore enacted by the Governor of Victoria with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council thereof as follows— I. If at any time after the passing of this Act any owner lessee or occupier of land within Victoria upon which land or upon the half of any road adjacent thereto any of the plants commonly known as the thistle shall be growing shall not within fourteen days after any notice in writing that such thistles are growing upon such land or upon such adj...

Gipps Land Guardian, Friday, 9th May, 1856. GIPPS LAND ROAD. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Guardian — 9 May 1856

Friday, 9ill'May, 1856. GIPPS LAND HOAR' Wis lately adverted to a survey of the contempla ted road from Melbourne to Gipps Land, which had been completed in 1854, as announced by the Surveyor General in a Report to the Governor; At that time- wo urged the necessity of having the line thoroughly cleared of timber, the rivers and creeks substantially bridged, and that a few men should.be kept constantly employed in filling up ruts and levelling tlie inequalities. Wc also , made two suggestions, the first ,of4 which was, that whatever was done on the road- should be: with the view of ultimately.converting it v into a railway ; and the second was, that in our opinion a wooden tramroad would be the best and cheap, est, and would answer1, our purposo till a more expeditious mode of travelling was required by the inhabitants of this district. - Now wo think it will be pretty readily admitted, that wo arc all very- fond of our - own ideas and suggestions;; and arc well pleased to- find them...

CORRESPONDENCE. DIRECT IMMIGRATION. To the Editor of the Gipps:Zand Guardian. ;i Sir,—One of tlie various topics of elec tioneering- claptrap circulated amongst us just: now, is. that of direct immigration from: Great Britain to'.Gipps Land. It lias, undoubtedly, an imposing- sound/ and we are all aware of the port to which this great ] boon is to be directed, but let this dodge i pass for the present. , I There can be no doubt that, if a number of unassisted immigrants with small - capi tals could >beinduced' to leave the'United Kingd om, for ; the purpose of settlin »• in Gipps La.nd, to cultivate the soil and to i develope the resources of- the district, it would be a very great' benefit to us all. But at appears to me there is very little i probability of anything of the kind being j accomplished', for many years to , come. • reople, or tne class alluded to, would not bo very likely, to.-know, there was., such a place Mas Gipps' Land in existence, much less its peculiar advan...
