Death of John L. Webb, Esq. we regret to learn that this gentleman died suddenly at his residence in Smithfield, Bradford co., on Saturday the 17th ibst—Mr. W. was a. successful candidate for the Legislature at me, late election, and scarcely was the result of his election known, ere we are called upon to chronicle his sudden departure. How fickle is the tenure of life. The election for Directors of the N. Y. 6c Erie Railroad took place at New York, last week. The old board were re-chosen for the ensuing vear. Sandwich Islands.—The American Missionaries deserve great praise for their labors in the Sandwich Islands, particularly in the progress of their free schools. Among the exercises we perceive a dialogue of Rpderic Dhu, delivered by Wm. C. Lamalilo. A scene from the will by Lot Kamchamelia, Moses Kckuaiwa and Alexander Lihaliha. Tfhe Pennsylvania volunteers, it is said, are {already called out, and a requisition ou Governor Wright is reported to have gone up to Albany. It isjirobable that three regiments of volunteers will be mustered into service.in this State. Geni Taylor must be reinforced, and it is absolutely necessary thafc the government should have troops at their disposition.—N. Y. Herald.

By the steamer Neptune, Captain Spinney, we have Galveston dates to the 11th inst. ^fbe news from the-army is but little later thdn that before received. The loss of the Americans in killed, wounded and missing (a |arge number having been taken prisoners byithe Mexicans) was about 1500. The loss of the Mexicans, in killed and wounded, amounts to,, by-the morning report of the 27Jjfcb, 1957.
