THE MANDARIN AND THE ENGLISH LADY. The degraded position of females in China ia well known. Nothing astonishes the Chinamen who visit our merchant* at Honkong so much as the deference which ia paid by our countrymen to their ladie_* _. and the posiiion which ihe latter are permitted to hold in society. The veiy servants express their disgust at seeing our ladies permitted to sit at table with their loids, and wonder how men can so far forget iheir dignity. A young English merchant recently took his youthful wife with him to Honkong, where the couple _uero visited by o wealthy Mandarin, The latter regarded the lady attentively, and seem ed to dwell with delight on her movements-When she at length left the apartment, he said to the husband, in his imperfect English. • What you eive for that wifey wife _yoora?' ' Oh,' replied the husband, laughing at the singular error of his visitor, ' two thousand dollars.' This our merchant thought, would appear to the Chinese rather a high ...

Important from Mexico—12 Days Later. The bark Pario, Capt. Kinney, at rived at New Orleans on the 23d ult. from Vera Cruz. By her the _editois of Ihe Picayune have received files from Vera _Cfiiz to the 11 th, and Irom the city of Mexico to the 8'h. The news is very important.— The Picayune says: The cily was filled yc_.terday with contradictory tumors in regard to Mr. Slidell. The report ot first credited was that he had been otdercd from the Republic; that he thereupon 'demanded an escort from _Jalapa to Vera Cruz, which was refused lo him ; thai Commander Gerry, uf the Soroers, then lying at Vera Cruz, upon this proceeded with a detachment of officers and marines to escort Mr. Slidell to the coast a distance of tome seventy or eighty miles. We do not attach much credit to this rumor—it ' appears impossible. Again: a letter dated the 9th, from Vera Cruz says, that up to thai date Mr. Slidell had nut demanded of the new government any recognition of his official capacity, b...
