the largest that I had ever seen, and with' tusks apparently three feet. long, was observed to bo making his way through the herd, With . mouth wide open, bellowing dreadfully. I was now, as before, busy loading; Knorr and Jasen bad just discharged their pieces, and the men were well engaged with their oars. It was a critical moment, but happily I was in-time. The nibn-Bter, his head L. ' «di above the boat was within two feet ' of the gunwalewhen I raised my piece and.fired' into his mouth. Tho discharge killed hini instantly, and he went dowli like aistone. \ The. End of; tho Democratic Party. ! The Democrats have certainly made the Imostof their Connecticut victory.:— Such a prolonged and triumphant cackling over bo small an egg wob never heard before.. The listener might have supposed that slavery was restored, that the policy ( of the nation had been annulled, that the war -hadjbeen ' finally denounced as wicked and fratricidal; that Toucey, the SSeyniours, and Vallandingham had been restored' to their niches as the most spotless of patriotic saints; and that the country, after eix yearS%f aberration, had now crawled to the stool of repentance, and was ir ivbk-Intr unon its sin the scorn and curse of •mankind. We' must again assure our friend of the Jersey Shore Vldette, and his coadjutor, brother Bowman, of the Clinton Republican, that we do not propose to enter upon any controversy on the Sunday car question. »»^rasoon would we undertake to maintain. t|he spheroidal form of the earth, or thej precession of the equinoxes, against the denial of the Pope who forced Galileo to recant, as to maintain that it is morally right to furnish means of cheap and rapid loco¬ motion to the denizens of a large city —when the masses demand it—on every day of the week. We claim for ourself perfect freedom of locomotion, to be enjoyed at all times, we being the judge of the mode of transit proper to be employed. This freedom we cheerfully accord ^o others. In the city we patronize streetcars, cabs r and carriages —as may.be most convenient. We recommend the Bible as a good book for our friends to read; and submit for their edification the following tex ' ts: Isaiah 65:5. Luke 18:9,10,11,12.— Genesis...
