Kennedy to be the Democratic candidate for President assured the nation's voters of one thing next November—a youthful president. Kennedy is 43 and Richard Nixon, a couple years his senior, is certain to be his GOP opponent. It is significant that the United States should have a young president at this crucial time when foreign affairs (the current duel with the Soviets) is the most important issue the U.S. government must contend with. WHAT MAKES YOU THINK HE'SGOINSTO _ PRINT IT? > 7-/7 Johnson Called Able Politician By ARTHUR EDSON LOS ANGELES (IP) — If there's any image that Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson has projected in the past five years as Senate Democratic leader, it's that of a man with a special knack of getting other senators to go his way. Now, as vice-presidential nominee, he will have a chance to show he can make those persuasive powers work on the American voters, too. For almost all his 51 years, Texan Johnson has prepared for this moment. As a boy, Lyndon listened to his father, Sam, a canny Texas politician. Sam Johnson thought a good politician s h o u 1 d be able to step into a crowded room—and decide ins t a n 11 y who would be for and who would be against him. As a young man, Johnson man, Johnson edson went to Washington as a congressman's secretary. He was to return as a representative, as a senator, as leader of the Democratic majority of the most deliberative, and often the most...
