TIMARU GRAIN MARKET [Newspaper Article] — Ashburton Guardian — 16 April 1910

TIMARU GRAIN MARKET Then© is no change to report m tho conditions of the Timaru market m wheat. If anything, there is an easier feeling, owing to very heavy offerings from Fanners. Good milling maintains a good demand from millers', and 4s f.oTb. for first-class milling mixed lines is tho ruling quotation, sacks extra. Sprouted wheat is lower m price, the market being rather congested. Today's price for fowl wheat is 3s 3d f.0.b.5.i. ; seconds, good demand, up to 3s 3d f.o.b.s.i. There is practically nothing doing m oats, except m the local trade. Farmers do not seem to have the oats to offer. Gartons aro 2s Id, Duns 2s. f.o.b.s.i.

THE BOY SCOUTS [Newspaper Article] — Ashburton Guardian — 16 April 1910

THE BOY SCOUTS STATEMENT BY THE HON. G. FOWLDS. Per Press Association.' WELLINGTON, April 14. Since the publication of the new cadet regulations, dissatisfaction has existed among many oi tVioso responsible for the active work of tho Boy Scouts movement, their allegations being that an effort is being made by the military authorities m Wellington to remove the scouts from tho control of the body which has brought them into existence, and to make them merely a junior branch of the defence forco, without any of their present distinctive characteristics. These grievances of the scoutmasters were brought under the notico of the Hon. G. Fowlds, who as Minister of Education is the Ministerial head of the school cadets. The Minister assured a New Zealand Times representative that there had been no such policy as was suggested by some of the Boy Scouts' officers. It was, he said, at the request of the Boy Scouts organisation that provision was made m last session's Defence Act for them to f...

The Ashburton Guardian. [Newspaper Article] — Ashburton Guardian — 16 April 1910

The Ashburton Guardian. MaONA EBT VKRITAS XT Plt/KVAUJSIT SATURDAY, APRIL 10, 1910. Just now, up and Asuuuhton's down the dominion, Way. much is heard about mayoral elections. In many towns there arc keen contests m this connection; publio meetings tiro .being hold, and candidates arc also appealing to the ratepayers by means of printed addresses m the newspapers. This, m constitutionally-govemod communities, is obviously tho right way; m fact, tho only way that is consistent with wholesomeness m public affairs. It is not, however, Ashburton's way. Here, m municipal matters, candidates for the votes of the- people seldom if ever 'think it worth their while to address tho people publicly m any shape or form. This certainly is &^ odd way of showing respect for the people; it is also an odd way of showing how well candidates are acquainted with th« constitutional principles and tho pro-! cedure -which no oho should have the presumption to treat lightly and no one should be ...

THE WEATHER. [Newspaper Article] — Ashburton Guardian — 16 April 1910

THE WEATHER. TELEGRAPH COMMUNICATIONS INTERRUPTED. . . Olio of tho most serious features of the gale was the interruption to the telegraph service, both the main north route and the alternate service via the West Coast having been dislocatctt. Telegraphic communication with /vie North island was impossible all 'day yesterday, and both the interprovincial telegraph service and the intercolonial cable service were therefore disorganised. The wires -were carried away between Cliristchurch and Amberloy, and further north all the wires were down. Shortly lief ore three o'clock yesterday altCT'rio^n information was received' from Kaikoura. that a considerable section of the line fivo miles north of tho township, near Mount p Fyffe, haci been badly damaged, and it is understood that the interruption on the Kaikoura line is an extensive one.
