* -w m — Launch ofa Taeht at Teignmoatb . On Monday evening , the launch of a beautifully-modelled schooner yacht of 94 tons , took place from the sbip-building yard of Mr . J . B . Mansfield , of Teignmouth She was designed by Mr . Mansfield , and is the property of L . V . Paik ., Esq . of Haldon House , who expresses great satisfaction with her handsome appearance , and the accommodation she will afford . She was intended for a comfortable family yacht , and several nautical gentlemen have expressed their opinion tbat she is admirably calculated for such a purpose ; but it is expected she will turn out a clipper . Mr . Paik means to try hcr qualities at the Dublin Exhibition Regatta , where she will compete for the Cup , and we . hope she may prove as good as she looks , and maintain the celebrity which Mr . Mansfield has obtained as a shi p builder . The weather on the above interesting occasion was very unpropitious ; but , notwithstanding , hundreds of persons assembled to wit...

THE MAD WOIF [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 23 July 1853

THE MAD WOIF A Talc of the Rocky Mountains . IN the month of October , 1833 , I was on my return from a trapping tour on Green River , the Grand Colorado of the West , in company with three companions , one named Alexandre , a half-breed , Verboncoeur , a Frenchman , and an American named Worthington . After a long day s tramp , we halted in a neck of timber , upon a tributary of the Colorado , immediatel y bordering upon a wide spreading prairie ; and , having here p itched our tents , and tied the animals , we started out to reconnoitre the neighborhood surrounding the camp-ground . The country we had been travelling over all day lay immediately in the path of the roving bands of Arapaho and Crow Indians , and the former tribe was tho white man s inveterate foe . Caution , therefore , counselled us to examine the tracks imprinted around us before we resigned ourselves to security and repose . Having mounted a willow-covered ridge near the encampment , I descended into a small vall...

The Championship . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 23 July 1853

The Championship . BROOMS AND THE TIPTON SLASHM . — According to Broome s own appointment , the Slasher came to London from Dudley ; - Port , and attended at our office at twelve o clock on Friday , to draw up and sign articles to fi g ht Harry Broome , for 250 / . a side , in four months . Broome , however , did not , b put in an appearance . We therefore drew % articles in accordance with Broomes expressed desire , and these were signed by the Slasher , who , and we think with reason , expressed ; great disgust at Broome s conduct in putting him to the expense of travelling to town upwards of 100 miles , and then not keeping his appointment . We think with the Slasher , that Broome never intended fighting him , and that it would have been far better to have said so at once . As be has failed in putting in an appearance at his own time , we presume he has resigned all ri ght to the title of Champion , which is now claimed b y the Slasher , who is . open to fight any man in the worl...

THE SKIPPER'S CABIN . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 23 July 1853

THE SKIPPERS CABIN . A TALK WITH OUR FRIENOS—AT HOME ANn ABROAD . With this number , we enlarge the CLIPPEE , and raise the price to 3 cents per copy . An article in another column defines our position . Read it . • • * » • * Reminiscences of New York . — The sketches we published from week to week in the CLIPPES , have proved so deeply interesting to our readers that we havo concluded to continue them . This week we will take a walk down to the general Post Office , at Nassau and Liberty streets . In olden times , the old Dutch church , now the Post-office , was used by the British , then in possession of New York city , as a prison . The pews were all gutted out and used as fuel . Three thousand Americans were imprisoned in this church , and the dead cart used to take away every morning , six or eight of those who had died . The British afterwards used this same place for tho exercise of their cavalry , making them leap over raised windlasses , & c ., Sec , they also p...

• he natch between »» okee Null Iran and Jobs fflorriasef The announcement we made last week hat a match had teen made between these jwo pugilists , created a great excitement ibout town , and many individuals seemed b doubt the truth of our report , but on risiting the Sporting Houses about town , ihe fact was fully substantiated . The house of Sullivan , in Chatham itreet , had an extra number of visiters to nquire into the particulars , and ascertain ; he orig in of the match . Some persons seem to doubt that the cattle will take place , thinking that one of ihe parties will pay the forfeit , but numerous bets having been made to that effect , and the eagerness with which they have been taken up , seems to set tho matter at rest , and render the contemp lated mill a cert ainty . Nothing further , in tho way of preliminary arrangements , have been agreed upon since our last , but as soon as the parties and their backers come to a final determination , as to the full arrangements ,...
