Tbe Berkshire [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 June 1900
Tbe Berkshire nm . tmm mm » GOOD FOR OHIO . Karl B . Clough , North Amherst , O ., the popular Vice President of the American Berkshire Association for Ohio , has been making an active canvass among the Berkshire breeders of said state for the purpose of securing consignments to make a public sale of fifty head of Berkshires . In a late letter he writes : After corresponding with Ohio breeders I find that they are all in favor of a public sale , but that they have nothing at present to put in . The past year has been a record breaker for Ohio breeders . It is good news to say that there is hardly a Berkshire in Ohio for sale . I think that we may be able to arrange for a bred sow sale for next February . Mr . W . H . Ker , Prairie du Rocher , continues to have a large run of sales . In late letter he writes of 42 recent sales . He has just received orders for two to go to Texas , one to Arkansas , and one to Nebraska . He has thirty fine pigs for summer trade and will be well suppli...

i Jersey Cattle [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 June 1900
i Jersey Cattle UTILITY AND BEAUTY COM B 1 KED—( Continued ) . II . Of late years much attention has been given in England to public tests at the fairs . As a rule , the cream is churned . The greatest of these shows is held at Tring , the country seat of Lord Rothschild , one of the most enthusiastic breeders of Jerseys in England . In these public tests the cows are usually divided into two classes : 1 . Cow not exceeding 900 lbs . in live ¦ weight ; and 2 . Cows exceeding 900 lbs . in live weight . At some of the shows , with the object of increasing the tendency toward continuity in butter making , the classes in the butter testa are divided into 1 . Cows having calved under a hundred days , and 2 . Cows having calved one hundred days or over . There is hardly a fair held in England today that has not , as one of its main features , a butter test . It will , I hope , be of some interest to your readers to learn something of the records made by the English Jerseys in these public...
ISouthdown Sbeep [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 June 1900
ISouthdown Sbeep The Farm Home Is read by more parsons interested in Southdown sheep than any other journal in the country . Southdown breeders should not forget that they will save penalty fees by having their 1899 crop recorded before July 1 . To have your name carried in column Where to Buy Southdowns , for one year will cost you $ 5 . 00 . During the year the name will be repeated 300 , 000 times . Do you think $ 5 . 00 could be better invested ? Mr . J . A . Leland , Springfield , 111 ., last fall bred 51 Southdown ewes , of these five failed to lamb . one of the failures being a ewe ten years old . The 46 ewes brought him 58 live and two dead lambs . The entire flock is inoreased more than 100 per cent . Mr . M . C . Abrams , Manor , Texas , writes : My flock ram was two years old in April . He weighed 135 pounds at 1 year old ; 163 at 18 months and now 205 pounds . On May 22 he sheared 12 % pounds . My ewes sheared heavier than ever , as much as 9 pounds , 12 months and 10 da...

j Che Dairy j [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 June 1900
j Che Dairy j SHOULD BUTTER BE COLORED ? By F . W . Moseley . The above is not a very serious question so far as artificial color effecting the actual quality of the butter itself is concerned . There is no better color than can be given it by the cows when abundantly fed on June grass , and if that color , or one near to it can be produced by breed or feed—or both—at other seasons of the year , what better can be asked for ? But it seems to be a settled fact that there is nothing in jurious in a vegetable butter color introduced through the cream into the butter . By its use in the right quantity a good June color can be produced , one that is pleasant to the eye and as a result makes the butter more acceptable to the palate . If the above be true , then what possible objection can there be to coloring butter ? The answer is it is a stumbling block when undertaking to prevent the makers of bogus butter from coloring their product in imitation of genuine butter . It is not necessary...

FRUITFUL FIELDS OF WASTE PLACES . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 June 1900
FRUITFUL FIELDS OF WASTE PLACES . The great west contains vast stretches of the richest land , which needs only water to transform into fruitful fields . In many places also the water is available , but running to waste , and all that is needed is the expense of labor to create farming lands of the most profitable character , and at nominal prices . The possessor or an irrigated farm is in a measure independent of the weather . The drought at the seeding or in the growing time or rain at the time ot harvest have no terrors for him . but he can apply water when and in quantities as needed to produce the largest yield and pursue his harvest at his leisure , sure of a full yield and a perfect product . There are many thousands of irrigation systems in successful operation ; in fact , this is perhaps the oldest and most scientific system of farming . Many systems have also failed because the promoters have overreached themselves in trying to acquire riches by bonding and stocking such s...
