NEWS OF THE WEEK- fl [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 11 April 1868

NEWS OF THE WEEK- fl —The testimony on the Impeachment W trial , on tbe part of the managers was fin- W . ished on Saturday last . A number of news- It paper men were examined as to the Presidents speeches , on which the last two charges are based . Newspaper reports , from short-hand notes , were admitted as evidence . Much of tbe other evidence was documentary . Chief Justice Chase , in the early part of the week , stated his right to decide on questions of law and evidence , subject to the decision of the Senate if the questions were afterward submitted to them . This claim was granted to him , after a lengthy discussion , by the adoption of a new rule of procedure . The right , however , was . little exercised , as Mr . Chase usually submitted aU questions to the Senate . On their own request , the Counsel were allowed until Thursday , April !> , to arrange their defense . The Court adjourned on Saturday until that day . The Senate continued to meet for transaction of...

Failure of Cotton-A Valuable Substi -tute . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 11 April 1868

Failure of Cotton-A Valuable Substitute . The cotton crop was greatly lessened by the price of labor and the drought of 1866 . It was nearly , cut off by floods and snows in 1867 . Removal of the Government tax , with the recent advance in value , may encourage another effort on the part of those who are not already bankrupt . There Is a general disposition evinced to abandon its culture for t aat of the cereals , which require less labor and pay a larger return per acre . A large portion of the richest cotton lands are overgrown with a growth of young forest trees , which , If allowed to grow a few years longer ,, will cost the present value of the land to remove them . Cotton machinery , with the buildings , are going rapidly into decay , presenting the grave possibility that the importance of cotton , as a staple , will soon cease . Indeed , it cannot now be possibly grown without u pro tection duty , The application of free labor to the management of the cotton crop seems an imp...

Sorghum Growing Again . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 11 April 1868

Sorghum Growing Again . Select an average piece of such ground as you have on your farm . To describe the kind of soil it should be planted in would be useless , for we do not all have the sort some would designate . Sorghum will do well In any , provided ltls properly managed in the beginning . Qpr common average soil Is better adapted to sorghum producing than onr rich prairie corn soil , for this reason : —Where the stalks grow so large they become pithy , and without much juice , while with that grown on land not so rich the stalks are smaller and full of rich juice . Where one cannot plant only on strong land , I would advise to grow more in a hill , sayfrotnlSto 18 stalks ; on medium laud 7 to 10 ; and on very poor 4 to 5 in a bill , three feet six inches apart , and that helped along with a good coat of barn-yard manure . It should not be planted too early in the Spring ; but as soon as the ground becomes in good working order in tbe Spring It should be plowed and harrowed , ...

Hints on Spreading Seeds . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 11 April 1868

Hints on Spreading Seeds . lwish that the editors or some of the numerous correspondents of THE WESTEBN RURAL would write down the wretched system of sowing wheat still so common in some districts . A field of wheat in thick and thin stripes , of two or even three plants in the first to one In the last , Is a disgrace to any farmer . Tell the seed sowers to walk right when sowing , and this will be impossible . Seed can only be distributed evenly from tbe hand In a seml-clrcle , and to do this while walking at one end of the scml-circle and casting it all on one side is impossible . Let the sower walk in the middle of the cast and throw lt equally on both sides , and shift his track one half the width of the cast at each end of the lot , and the most slovenly hand will make fair work . Thus each line of track will have the edge of two easts and the middle of one . But still a careful examination will reveal a difference between the right and left sides , which would be unnoticed by ...
