Nearly twenty millions of sur plus in the treasury on the 4th of March, 1857, with the accruing revenues, have been squan dered, and an aggregate loan of thirty-five millions authorized in addition. The enor mous expenditures of the present and pre ceding administration, have attracted the public mind to the subject in such a manner and shape, a that a thorough investigation is inevitable.
