THE FELICIANA SENTINEL. A FAST TOWN. Leadville, Lake county, Colorado, is the highest. new est and, for its size, the noisi est city on the continent. It is what miners call a rattling camp. It is close up to the snowy range, overlooking California Gulch, the scene of the gold-hunting furore of 1859. At an altitude of about 9,000 feet, or, to put it more fotcibly, nearly two miles higher than New York, it may be considered as well up in the world. There is no place like it in the whole Rocky Mountains. It is a larger city than Deadwood on the nort., or Silverton or Lake city on the south. The 20-year old towns of Black Hawk, Central and George tomd are nothing to it in pop ulation, trade, fast money making and fast everything. Where Leadville now stands was a year ago almost a howl ing wilderness. There were a few prospectors busying themselves with turning up the rocks here and there, but there was hardly what could be called a camp. No town had been staked out. It was not until la...

.THE BUI1lAA 8ENTINEL. WAGES AND LIVING EXPENSES. Commissioner Lo Due is collect. ing statistics for his next annual report concerning the rate of wages and the cost of living among farm laborers throughout the United States. i:Within the last year he has asecertaired the cost of living and the average rate of wages paid havb decreased about fifteen per cent. in all parts of the country, with exception, perhaps, of Mince'. sota, Colorado, California and Or egon and Washington Territory. In Colorado and New Mexico there has been an increase in the rate of wages paid, and a corresponding inerease in the cost of living, owing to the demand for labor resulting from the large mining operations that have developed within the last twelve months. THE FELICIANA SENTINEL. TCg"'bhe returns from the Maine election are still v( ry cloudy, but cnough: is known to satisfy every one that the republican gain is large. The latest telegraphic advices con tain the follow'ng : The latest re turns indicate that the Republicans have a majority in the House ard Sera to, and that Davis, Republican candidate for Governor will have a considerable plurality over the oth er candidates. The Democrats however, claim that the Senate is undecided, and some doubt is ex pressed touching Davis's plurality. Returns, although not oflicial, d how: House, 87 Republicans to 64 opposition ; Senate. 15 Repub. licans to 10 opposition, wits YorK, Oxford and Franklin uncertain. .Tilh FELICIANA SENTINEL. ANoraTa ITraETIOx. -The ver eatile ingenuity of a Western in ventor, who doubtless foresees the time in the far-distant future when the forest shall cease to clothe the hills and dales, and thedemand for lumber shall prove vastly in excess of the supply, has succeeded in de vising a substitute for the na ural product of the virgin or the culti vated soil. His plan is to use that fragile vegetdble, straw, and by a peculiar process to compress it into a substance as hard and indestruc tible as oak timbor. It is claimed that this process converts wheat straw into timber which is suscept ible of as fue a polish and finish as mahogany and black walnut, at a cost not in excess of that of the best clear pine. The straw is first manufactured by the ordinary pa per-mill process into straw-board, and a sufficient number of sheets of this of the right size are taken to make the required timber. They are soaked and softened into a chemical solution, which is, of course...
