£•• Water For City Streeta. Th* ancient idea of flushing the »ew en and gutters of city street* with sea water is being vigcronslv discussed In many places. In England it has coma Into such favor that a proposition is now put forward to supply the city of London with sea water. The water would be taken from the sea at a spot not far from Brighton remarkably free from pollution. It would be pumped into a reservoir of 10,000,000 gallons. Thence it would be forced into another reservoir, from which it would gravi tate to London. The present consump tion of water in London is 200,000,000 gallons a day, of which 40,000,000 gal- : lons is used for municipal purposes, j This might be saved for domestic pur- j poses by the introduction of sea water. The cost of the project is put at $2,250, - 000, and the sea wator would be sup plied by meter for public purposes at a fraction of the present cost of fresh wa ter. One watering of the streets with j sea water is said to be equal to two, or ; e...

ESCAPED FROM CHILL j THE DANGEROUS ADVENTURE OF DETECTIVE W. M. LUGG. Compelled to Cross the Mountains on Blulebnck -Taken Sick During the Journey. From the Examiner, San Francisco, Cal. Four years ago, at the time of the trouble between the United States and Chili, as a result of the killing of the j Bailors of the U. S. S. Baltimore, in the streets of a Chilian city, many Americans were obliged to leave the country for safety. Among them was W. M. Lugg, the private detective and collector, whose office is in the Crocker building, San Francisco, Cal. When Mr. Lugg left Chili he went across the mountains into Argentine, traveling on muleback. Mr. Lugg says that the trip is a de lightful one in point of beautiful scenery and perfect weather, but many people dislike to undertake it on ac count of the unhealthful stagnant water which they are compelled to drink along the way. Many persons have been stricken down with disease from having drank of it, and in a number of cases the attacks...

Supplement j FARMER'S EGG BASKET The McKinley Law Checked Im v portation and Gave a Home Market. EFFECT OF'TttE WILSON BILL The Canadian Farmer Has Protection but the American Farmer Has None. Then is uo reason why Canada, Mexi co. China, or any other country should ■apply the Iriiteii States with ii singly egg. Canada does pot liuy a single egg from us, and I here is no reason why we ahoold buy from her. When we do. the American farmer loses the benefit of part of his natural market. The purpose of this article is to show by a few figures the benefit which the American fanner derived from the Me- Kinlt'v law: not merely because the law stopepd imports from other countries, hut because under that law be received an average of 15 cents a dozen for his eggs all the year around. Under the present Wilson-* bill, he hardly averages 5 cents a dozen: and the people could better afford to pay 15 cents a dozen in 1892. than they can 5 cents a dozen in 1890.
