The Crops. We have devoted some ulltntion to investigating the present condi tion of the crops iv Los Angeles county. First, wo have ascerlaiued, and it is a most gratifying eircum- Htance, that the wheat crop of the Ban Fernando valley is In most capital trim. This comprises some fifteen or eighteen thousand acres. There is absolutely no lodgment of wheat there. The kernels are fill ing out finely aud the result can hardly fait to realize the anticipa tions ot the farmers. The fact is that we have nowhere heard of any injury to tho wheat crop. There have been rumors of disaster, but they have been rumors merely and inquiry has failed to confirm them, Coming down to the barley crop, It is an undoubted fact ...

There were rumors abroad lately that tbe wheat fields near the coast were badly rusted, hut we aro pleased to be informed that such is not the cose. What was taken for rust is simply the turning; of tlie grain when rlpeulng. The fields look well. The concert given by the pupils of Mr. Riddiuk's Institute, on Wednesday evening last, was a great success. A large audience attended, and heartily enjoyed the entertainment. The Best Atitude for a Republic. It gives us an inexpressible pleasure to note that tha Demo cratic House of Representatives has Inflexibly declared against a stand log army of twenty-five thousand men for the United States. There is one dream that ought to lie dear to the devotees of a Republic, at least, and that is that ■'parliament of mankind and confederation of the world" which have been tbe as piration of liberal men since the iron shackles of rank and privilege were first broken by the French Revolution. If the United States depends to-day for its pre-eminence on either its army or navy it should occupy a forty-third rank amongst the nations of the earth. Its navy—although tbe Republica...
