Have We no Patriots Among Hi! [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 8 February 1860

Have We no Patriots Among Hi! It is now but about four weeks until the municipal election; and "we are a brewer's horse " if we have heard of a single candidate for official honors upon that day. Not one. Has the spirit of patriotism followed olf the fanatical soul of old John Brown ? or has office lost its charms ? There are scores of very dear and affectionate fellow citizens among us who. overflowing with that sense of pride so peculiar to the freeborn sons of America. are all but bursting for a chance to illustrate the beauties of •• popular sovereignty'' and of universal franchise. Shall these proud yeomen of our Commonwealth wait aud long in vain ? Oh! who shall be buzzed, and .bummed, and honored? Let modest virtue and merit come forth at our call, and like the Roman logrollers of old. display the scars they have received in their manly strife to preserve, intact, the form . ad feathers of the proud bird that sails aud screams, and screams and sails in her majesty and freedom...

[From our own corre»i>ouiliMit.] San Francisco Correspondence. SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. G. EDITOR APPEAL : The indiscriminate slaughter ot' big and little " Injins," in Hound Valley and vicinity, by the renowned Jarboe and liis companions, has served to direct some degree of public attention lo the several semi-official reports that have been published regarding the warfare carried on against the Aborigines generally, in this State, within a year past. Major Johnson, commanding at Fort Weller, Mendocino county, has made serious charges against Col. Henley, late Indian Superintendent: and the Colonel to-day is out in a rather severe letter on the Major, in which the latter appears in a somewhat unenviable position. The substance of the charges preferred by tlie Major against Col. llenley is, that the Colonel headed a party iu Hound Valley to chastise the Indians, and that the said party did slaughter several "bucks. - ' lie, the said Colonel, being in the habit of I slaughterin...

ibe f ailg Appeal (From nur ww n Cwm»i<uuUiiit,] Hacrmiicnlo l'orrta|i«iUltiw«> SACRAMENTO, Feb 5, 1860. EDITOR APPEAL —The delegates to the Pacific Railroad Convention, arc mustering at the Capitol. "The Mr. Dougal has been here since Friday, and, is full ot Railroad talk, and enthusiastic hope tor the good to be attained by the debates, and recommendations of the Conventions. Of course I refer to General James A. Me J>ougal, whose linrd work, and faithful seal in the Pacific Railroad cause, entitle him to the grateful esteem of every Californian. It may be said that the General is riding a hobby, hoping to reach political honor thereby. If a man serves his country at all, he seldom expects to lose by it ; and if General McDougal is trying to obtain popularity by laboring for the interest of fhe people of California, why is he not a benefactor ? Good men generally strive to deserve approbation at the hands of others, by performing good actions, and ...

[From our own Correspondent.] San Francisco Corrc«poiidcncc< [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 8 February 1860

[From our own Correspondent.] San Francisco Corrc«poiidcncc< SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 4th, 18C0. EDITOR APPEAL :—The resolutions adopted by the Democratic County Committee, on Wednesday night, ignoring all past differences in the party, and inviting the eo-operation of the anti-Lecompton-ites, does not give general satisfaction. If the Lecomptouites were right in the outset, they are right to-day, and the action referred to looks like backing down from their position. The Lecompton democracy of old Tuolumne are at least consistent in proscribing persons who voted for Baker and McKibben, and the policy of the same faction in Yuba county, who have made the test, thatjn order to participate in primary elections, one must have voted for the ticket headed by Latham, cannot be questioned. It is hardly to be doubted, however, that the different interests will be eventually reconciled, and perhaps the sooner it is done, the better. In the way of military news, 1 have to inform you of ...

[Fin- the Ap|wiil.| N*ul*l* C*rrr.|W*dMCc. TIMBI CTOO. Feb. 4, IS6O. EDITOR APPEAL: —Your sprightly little sheet finds its way to our quiet village, and occupies a prominent position among the mass of reading matter received at this place. Business of every kind is very brisk, the miners having a good supply of water. Considerable money is being taken out. ■which is having a bad effect upon the morals of the young men here. An old Californian to visit the place, would think the good old days of forty-nine had returned. In some of the saloon?, faro and monte banks are in full blast, surrounded by scores of young men, who. in many instances, lose their last dollar. There are as many as thirty ••professional gentlemen" stopping here at present. The large tail flutue of Bovver A; MeCallis, thnt was huilt last summer, has. up to this time, ran ahout three months. The flume is ten feet wide, with a partition dividing it, leaving one side six, and the other four feet wide. This flume cost ...
