“For four days, prior to the accident, the crew had been successfully and heroically defending a section of critical line that had to be held to avoid serious, longterm problems,” a Grayback news release said.“ The weather had changed and the firefighters were being evacuated off the mountainside. The first 10-per-son crew was successfully transported to base camp and the helicopter returned for the remaining part of the crew. And then the accident occurred.” Grayback Forestry reported that its ten firefighters in the crash had been part of a 20-person crew working on the fire. The helicopter’s other pilot from Carson Helicopters, William Coultas of Cave Junction, Ore., remains in critical condition and is expected to stay at the burn center for at least a month. He has sec-ond-and third-degree burns over a third of his body, mostly on his hands, arms and legs. He had skin-graft surgery Thursday to treat third-degree burns. Grayback firefighter Richard Schroeder, 42, was released on...

5» If By AMY GITTELSOHN There’s a world of opportunity out there for young people, and 14 Trinity County high school students recently took advantage of a program to show some of it to them. The incoming sophomores and juniors from Trinity, Hayfork and Southern Trinity high schools participated in the Upward Bound program. They were part of a group of 46 students from Humboldt and Trinity counties. Upward Bound, a U. S. Department of Education TRIO program, is hosted by Humboldt State University in Arcata. One of three education outreach programs launched in the 1960s, Upward Bound introduced the students to five weeks of college prep classes and campus living while allowing them to earn high school credits. After the June 22 to July 26 session, it was capped with a tour of six North State colleges, camp- ing along the way. On July 27 the group traveled through Trinity County on their way to the college tour, stopping for a picnic at Lowden Park. The students were enthusiastic. “Upw...
