Faculty Column: by Mary Evelyn Collins Dear Students: Welcome welcome back. A university campus without students is like a ghost town. HSU is just not complete without all of you. this year brings many changes to the campus. The new president Lanny Hall has lots of ideas and plenty of energy to accomplish his goals. Changes are scary but the very nature of life is centered on change. Education is a process that has a cycle of constant change because it is growth through learn- ing. This can be a painful difficult and time consuming process but it is at the same time a joyful exciting and satisfying activity. I like to think of the challenge of learning as equivalent to a sports game: you practice hard meet an opponent sometimes you lose (pain) sometimes you win (joy) but when you've done your best you feel great satisfaction. Study- ing is hard evaluations are like meeting an opponent sometimes the results are good sometimes the results are excellent. But when you've done your best ...

Sports P.4 Pounds leads golfers into new school year HSU Sports Information When Drue Pounds walked off the eighteenth green at the Twin Hills Country Club in Oklahoma City last May he had achieved a first in the history of Hardin- Simmons University. Before the tournament the Business major from Brownwood was nomed to the NAIA All-America honors making him the first Cowboy athlete to be named a double All-American. Pounds played extremely well in the 72 hole tournament leading the field after the first day with a two under par 70. He led the pack as late as the seventy-first hole but a bogey dropped him one stroke behind eventual champion Cam Beckwith of Texas Lutheran. "Coaching Drue has been a privilege." said HSU coach Jeff Goodin. jiiiffloiilliiottii Off the Editor's Desk: We don't always get what we want by Richard Ruane Well as our sharper freshman may have noticed the Brand has not in- creased to 8.5 by 14. The moral of this story is: never make a promise to in- crease your paper size until you've checked with your printers. It looks like we are going to be at our current size for a little bit longer. Since our space is somewhat lim- ited we will have to start asking for event announcements well in advance so that we can plan and make room for them. Also though we will do our best to make sure all student letters run on time if your letter isn't dated in some way (meaning related to a certain news event or something similar) you may have to wait a week or so to see it. We will do our best to contact you if the publication of your letter is going to be delayed though I won't make any promises and we will try and publish every student letter we get (within rea- son). While we are on the topic of student lett...

Non-Traditional Student: Columnists proposes new grading system by John Carroll I think when you graduate from high school and go to college things should change. Many things do but the grading system doesn ' L This causes a lot of problems because your parents think you should be able to make the same grades in college as you did in high schol. The high school I attended awarded grades on the following basis: A - 'I did my homework.' B - 'I paid attention during class.' C - 'I stayed awake in class.' F - 'I didn't come to school and I slept through class if I did.' Hardin-Simmons awards grades on the following basis: A- 'Icouldbeteachingthiscourse.' B - I used to teach this course.' C - 'I worked my fingers to the bone.' F - 'I paid attention during class.' As you can see it would be hard for a non-student (parents) to understand the discrepancies between the grading systems. I think it would be better to grade in a more understandable fash- ion and a more positive fashion. Why sho...
